To kick off June Bloom, why not create some pages for your current fandom love?

Help share your love for and preserve the history of your current fandom by documenting it on Fanlore! Here are some ideas to get you started:

What are your current fandoms?
  • Do you love a shiny new fandom that doesn't have a Fanlore article yet? Start one and help recruit more fans!
  • Are you part of a megafandom? Help other fans find the fandom's hidden gems by making pages for your favorite fanworks!
  • Part of a small fandom? Help others know where to look to find fanworks, discussion, and fellow fans!
  • Part of a fandom with an open canon? Help document the current state of the fandom, and preserve those wacky fan theories before they get Jossed! Even if the canon jumps the shark, let the fannish gems shine!

What is the most recent fanwork that you loved? What's the last fic you read, podfic you listened to, vid you watched, or other fanwork you consumed, that blew you away? Make sure it's not forgotten!

What current events are causing a stir in your fandom?
  • Tyler Hoechlin leaving Teen Wolf as a regular? Make pages for all your favorite Sterek fics, all the Derek Hale vids, or your favorite Sourwolf fanart.
  • Hannibal coming back this week? Celebrate by eating the rude creating a Hannigram or Bedannibal page, or pages for the fanworks that held you over between seasons.

What have you fallen in love with recently? A new character? Pairing? Fan author or artist? Come forth and gush!

Remember: don't feel pressured to write a long, involved analysis for a topic. Fanlore is a wiki, so someone else will come along to polish things up and flesh things out. Simply starting a stub will plant a seed that will grow and bloom into a full article!

Need more inspiration? Check out Fanlore's Wish List. Not sure how to get started? See Help:Tutorial and Help:Starting a new page.

Tell us in the comments below about pages you create or your future June Bloom plans!

Have you ever searched for something on Fanlore only to come up empty? Have the words "How does this not have a Fanlore page yet?!" ever crossed your mind? Have you ever wanted to share something fandom related with your fellow fans?

If you answer YES to at least one of these questions then this month's challenge is for you!

Use June Bloom to start the pages you always wanted to see on Fanlore! Spread the love of your fandoms to others.

The pages you create don't have to be complex! They can be as small as this Elijah/Elena page, or as big as this Derek Hale one. We want you to simply sow the seeds and watch these pages bloom as other editors add their own knowledge and perspective. With your help we will be able to turn Fanlore into a beautiful garden full of different pages everybody will be able to enjoy.

If you don't know where to start, don't worry! Every week we will be posting a theme to help inspire you. Stay tuned for the very first theme, coming later today!

If you don't like editing on your own, the editing party will take place June 13th. (We plan on starting at 4pm UTC, but who knows how long the party will last?) For those who can't make it, there will be a staffer ready to help you every weekend in June. Simply stop by the Fanlore chatroom. If you find the Fanlore room empty, leave your your question (along with your Fanlore username) and we will get in touch with you on your Talk page. Plus you can always send an email to the Fanlore Gardeners.

Remember:
As an anti-spam preventative measure, brand new accounts are not allowed to create pages for the first four hours. But that doesn't mean you can't help by editing existing pages first! It will be great practice for those unfamiliar with wiki editing.

Start by checking out the New Visitor Portal then start searching for things connected to your fandom! You can also check out the Fanlore Wish List for inspiration.

Some of these pages are still stubs and can use some love; even those that aren't can always benefit from additional fannish perspectives!

If you're not sure where to start, check out our New Visitor Portal! It will guide you through getting an account, Fanlore policies, and wiki editing.

Check out the April Showers challenge tag on AO3 for inspiration on other fandoms to contribute to — or, if you don't see your fandoms there yet, all the more reason to share!

Help us wash away the winter - it's time for April Showers!

In the month of April we hope you'll help us spruce up Fanlore by dusting off neglected wiki entries.

Fanlore records decades of fannish activity, from the days before the internet all the way to current events shaping fandom. If you have old zines, or fond memories of a long-ago convention, write about them on Fanlore. If there's new drama in your fandom, or a new trend in fanart, write about those too! Fanlore is open to everyone, and we encourage everyone to edit it and add their own experiences. Fannish history is our history.

The OTW is also proud to be able to offer an archive for fanworks at Archive of Our Own and we invite you to take the time to post both new works and old works that are languishing in ancient blogs or buried in your harddrive. Add them to AO3 so other fans can enjoy them! You can even backdate them to show their original creation date, and use our pseud system to preserve old fandom aliases. If you're posting works, use the tag April Showers 2015 so that everyone can find them. Or, if there's a fanwork already on the archive that you think more people should see, bookmark it and add it to the April Showers Recs collection.

If you'd like to edit Fanlore pages, but you aren't sure how, don't panic! There will be an editing party in the Fanlore chatroom on Saturday, April 4th at 16:00 UTC (when is that in my timezone?). Come and ask questions, familiarise yourself with Fanlore, or just chat with other editors.

There will be a second chat towards the end of the month - keep an eye on this community for the exact date and time.

To help get you started, we're highlighting a different fandom every day via our twitter accounts; [twitter.com profile] fanlore_news and [twitter.com profile] ao3org. Follow us for a daily dose of fandom!

The Wiki Committee is pleased to announce Stub September 2014!

While fans are welcome to edit Fanlore at any time of the year, next month the Wiki Committee is organizing a special event. Stub September is a challenge for anyone, newcomers and seasoned Fanlore editors alike, to pick a stub and expand on it. A stub is an article on Fanlore that is under-developed and missing important information. Right now, there are over 1600 existing pages on Fanlore that are already identified as stubs. You're invited to use the list to find a page where you know something about the topic, and edit the page to add your new information. It's as simple as that.

In addition to the identified stubs, there two other types of articles, pages that need expansion and examples wanted, that need more information.

Pages that need expansion are pages that are too long to be considered stubs, but are still missing crucial information; e.g., there may be some empty placeholder sections that need filling in. This category was created in response to user feedback during the first Stub September.

Examples wanted are pages that are missing specific examples to define or illustrate the page topic. This category is much shorter and needs more specific information. If you know any examples, please just add them to the page!

New this year:

This year, we have chosen to focus on specific types of stubs during each week of the month. This is intended to make it easier to decide on a page to work on, but you are welcome to work on any stub (or any other article!) at any time. There will be new themes each week of September, so make sure to watch this space for more information. The first theme will be announced tomorrow!

Feel free to post links to the articles you work on and let others know about the project! If you haven't yet tried your hand at writing something for Fanlore, Stub September is a good month to add more information to existing Fanlore articles without having to start your own page from scratch. And you might also find out -- it's fun!

To help newcomers get started, the Wiki Committee will be organizing an editing party on Sunday, September 14th at 19:00 UTC (what time is that in my timezone?) in the Fanlore chat room where you can come and ask questions or just work on entries alongside other people.

If you're unable to attend the editing party but have questions about Fanlore or how to get started, you can post below, or contact us.

As part of the OTW's 2014 April Showers, the Wiki Committee invites you to a Fanlore editing chat in the Fanlore chat room on Saturday, 19 April at 20:00 UTC (What time is that where I live?).

Come hang out with other Fanlore editors, get help with your first wiki edits, or discuss new content ideas for the April Showers fandoms so far or any other Fanlore pages! Fanlore staff will be present to answer any questions about Fanlore editing and will be happy to assist new users. Everyone is welcome!

We hope to see you there!

Stub September is a challenge for Fanlore editors and gardeners to pick a stub and expand on it. A stub is an article on Fanlore that is under-developed and missing important information. Right now, there are nearly 1800 existing pages on Fanlore that are already identified as stubs. You're invited to use the list and the index at the top of the page to find a page where you know something more and edit the page to add your new information. It's as simple as that.

In addition to the identified stubs, there are also pages that are missing specific examples to define or illustrate the page topic. This category, examples wanted, is much shorter and needs more specific information. If you know any examples, please just add them to the page.

In other words, Stub September is a good month to add more information to existing Fanlore articles. Have fun and good luck!

ETA: Feel free to post links to the articles you work on, whether it is updating a stub yourself or reviewing a stub and upgrading it to the examples wanted template. Comment here and let your editing colleagues know what you've been doing. We all want to share the experience when we're improving on Fanlore.

A few news items from the Wiki Committee for you all.

First, users rightly pointed out that the Identity Protection policy page could be clearer about what to do when you have an identity protection issue (short answer:contact the committee!), so we added some bold text at the top of the page. The policy itself has not changed.

Second, the Archive of Our Own is hosting their second April Showers challenge to upload your old fanworks, especially from older fandoms that may be underrepresented on the archive. Each day will focus on a different fandom (announced via twitter, see also fanlore_news). As part of the challenge, we invite everyone to add their fandom memories to Fanlore. We will be hosting two editing chat sessions in the Fanlore chat room where you can ask questions about wiki editing.
The first session is this Friday 08:00 GMT (in your time zone)

The second session will be sometime during the weekend of April 14-15. More details later.

Thirdly, for those who are not subscribed to the [community profile] otw_news community, here is the Fanlore section of the OTW's March newsletter:
Another new member joined the Wiki committee: welcome, Shannon!

The Wiki committee is currently planning and working on several projects, including forums and a mediawiki upgrade to fight spam.

Last weekend, the committee held two informal chats for our new members and gardeners, which we hope to turn into a regular event for anyone interested.

On Fanlore, editors have been very busy adding vids to several new categories, for example Supernatural vids, Battlestar Galactica vids, Buffy the Vampire Slayer vids, Angel vids, and Firefly vids. Other new categories with many pages already are Vidding Awards and The Professionals Fanfiction.

Hello, everyone! The Wiki Committee is still in the process of collecting itself for the 2012 term, but [personal profile] esskay has suggested some excellent challenges for February. They were all so good, I couldn't pick just one. We now present....
Fanlore Valentines!

1. Look up the Fanlore article on a fanwork you love to see if any reviews of the work are quoted on the page. If not, express your love by finding a review and adding a brief quote (with link) to the page. (If Fanlore doesn't have a page for this fanwork at all, feel free to start the page. Tell us why you love it!)

2. What challenges, fests, gift exchanges, etc., are running right now? Check to see if Fanlore has articles about them. If the article exists, add up-to-date information; if the article doesn't exist, create it!

If these don't tickle your fancy, check out esskay's list of Valentine challenges. And you are always welcome to take up a previous challenge at any time.

Here are some resources to get you started: Read more... )

At long last, a new challenge! The Total Braindump Challenge (from July) is definitely closed, and we now present....

Women Characters, Science Edition!
In celebration of Ada Lovelace Day (October 7), why not create a Fanlore article about your favorite female character who is a scientist, engineer, or mathematician? Tell us about your fannish experiences with these characters — the women themselves, the relationships they’re in (het, lesbian, canonical, fannish, etc.), the fanworks they star in — whatever you can think of! You can stub out a new page, or add a sprinkle of information on an existing page.

The What's Hot Now challenge is officially closed! (Remember, you are always welcome to take up a previous challenge at any time; check out our previous challenges here.) We now present...

Total Braindump Challenge: "The best of times, the worst of times..."

Pick an event in fandom that, for better or worse, people are still
talking about years (or months) later. If it doesn't yet have an
article on Fanlore, create one, and throw into it everything you can
think of. Tag the page with {{stub}} and possibly also add the words
"total braindump" somewhere near the beginning, so later people know
they're actively encouraged to clean up the page, add details, and
move things around.

Here are some resources to get you started: You can use the event infobox
template
if you're starting a new page. Check out what events already have some coverage in the Fandom Occurrences category. If you want to write about something that happened at a convention, you can also look at the Convention category. Throw your ideas on a page and link to it here, so other people can add their memories, play with the formatting, etc.

A new Fanlore challenge awaits!

We challenge you to contemplate and document What’s Hot Now -- What’s the most recent fanwork (story, vid, piece of fanart) you’ve seen and loved? Create a page for it and write about why it is awesome.

Remember, you can always go back to the Red Print challenge at any time! We welcome new edits on old challenges :)
