The distinction is rather subtle online, but there's definitely divisions when it comes to stuff you actually do in person. In Western Australian fandom we have cosplay clubs and a slashcon as well as transformative work-fandom subsets of bigger scifi or anime cons, and all of these are influenced by the different culture of Australian scifi and anime fandom.
Also the relevant laws (copyright, child porn etc) are different.
