Stub September - Fandoms

For this year's Stub September, we have chosen weekly themes to focus on specific types of stubs. However, you are always welcome to work on any stub (or any other article!) at any time.

The first week's theme is fandoms!

There are a number of pages about individual fandoms that need more information. Some of the current stubs include:

and many more! Feel free to browse the stubs, pages that need expansion, and examples wanted categories.

Stub September 2014!

image by caitie of autumn leaves

The Wiki Committee is pleased to announce Stub September 2014!

While fans are welcome to edit Fanlore at any time of the year, next month the Wiki Committee is organizing a special event. Stub September is a challenge for anyone, newcomers and seasoned Fanlore editors alike, to pick a stub and expand on it. A stub is an article on Fanlore that is under-developed and missing important information. Right now, there are over 1600 existing pages on Fanlore that are already identified as stubs. You're invited to use the list to find a page where you know something about the topic, and edit the page to add your new information. It's as simple as that.

In addition to the identified stubs, there two other types of articles, pages that need expansion and examples wanted, that need more information.

Pages that need expansion are pages that are too long to be considered stubs, but are still missing crucial information; e.g., there may be some empty placeholder sections that need filling in. This category was created in response to user feedback during the first Stub September.

Examples wanted are pages that are missing specific examples to define or illustrate the page topic. This category is much shorter and needs more specific information. If you know any examples, please just add them to the page!

New this year:

This year, we have chosen to focus on specific types of stubs during each week of the month. This is intended to make it easier to decide on a page to work on, but you are welcome to work on any stub (or any other article!) at any time. There will be new themes each week of September, so make sure to watch this space for more information. The first theme will be announced tomorrow!

Feel free to post links to the articles you work on and let others know about the project! If you haven't yet tried your hand at writing something for Fanlore, Stub September is a good month to add more information to existing Fanlore articles without having to start your own page from scratch. And you might also find out -- it's fun!

To help newcomers get started, the Wiki Committee will be organizing an editing party on Sunday, September 14th at 19:00 UTC (what time is that in my timezone?) in the Fanlore chat room where you can come and ask questions or just work on entries alongside other people.

If you're unable to attend the editing party but have questions about Fanlore or how to get started, you can post below, or contact us.

April Showers Editing Party!

As part of the OTW's 2014 April Showers, the Wiki Committee invites you to a Fanlore editing chat in the Fanlore chat room on Saturday, 19 April at 20:00 UTC (What time is that where I live?).

Come hang out with other Fanlore editors, get help with your first wiki edits, or discuss new content ideas for the April Showers fandoms so far or any other Fanlore pages! Fanlore staff will be present to answer any questions about Fanlore editing and will be happy to assist new users. Everyone is welcome!

We hope to see you there!

Fanlore Challenge: Stub September

Stub September is a challenge for Fanlore editors and gardeners to pick a stub and expand on it. A stub is an article on Fanlore that is under-developed and missing important information. Right now, there are nearly 1800 existing pages on Fanlore that are already identified as stubs. You're invited to use the list and the index at the top of the page to find a page where you know something more and edit the page to add your new information. It's as simple as that.

In addition to the identified stubs, there are also pages that are missing specific examples to define or illustrate the page topic. This category, examples wanted, is much shorter and needs more specific information. If you know any examples, please just add them to the page.

In other words, Stub September is a good month to add more information to existing Fanlore articles. Have fun and good luck!

ETA: Feel free to post links to the articles you work on, whether it is updating a stub yourself or reviewing a stub and upgrading it to the examples wanted template. Comment here and let your editing colleagues know what you've been doing. We all want to share the experience when we're improving on Fanlore.

Wiki in March, April Showers, and policy page clarification

A few news items from the Wiki Committee for you all.

First, users rightly pointed out that the Identity Protection policy page could be clearer about what to do when you have an identity protection issue (short answer:contact the committee!), so we added some bold text at the top of the page. The policy itself has not changed.

Second, the Archive of Our Own is hosting their second April Showers challenge to upload your old fanworks, especially from older fandoms that may be underrepresented on the archive. Each day will focus on a different fandom (announced via twitter, see also fanlore_news). As part of the challenge, we invite everyone to add their fandom memories to Fanlore. We will be hosting two editing chat sessions in the Fanlore chat room where you can ask questions about wiki editing.
The first session is this Friday 08:00 GMT (in your time zone)

The second session will be sometime during the weekend of April 14-15. More details later.

Thirdly, for those who are not subscribed to the [community profile] otw_news community, here is the Fanlore section of the OTW's March newsletter:
Another new member joined the Wiki committee: welcome, Shannon!

The Wiki committee is currently planning and working on several projects, including forums and a mediawiki upgrade to fight spam.

Last weekend, the committee held two informal chats for our new members and gardeners, which we hope to turn into a regular event for anyone interested.

On Fanlore, editors have been very busy adding vids to several new categories, for example Supernatural vids, Battlestar Galactica vids, Buffy the Vampire Slayer vids, Angel vids, and Firefly vids. Other new categories with many pages already are Vidding Awards and The Professionals Fanfiction.

New Challenge: Fanlore Valentines

Hello, everyone! The Wiki Committee is still in the process of collecting itself for the 2012 term, but [personal profile] esskay has suggested some excellent challenges for February. They were all so good, I couldn't pick just one. We now present....
Fanlore Valentines!

1. Look up the Fanlore article on a fanwork you love to see if any reviews of the work are quoted on the page. If not, express your love by finding a review and adding a brief quote (with link) to the page. (If Fanlore doesn't have a page for this fanwork at all, feel free to start the page. Tell us why you love it!)

2. What challenges, fests, gift exchanges, etc., are running right now? Check to see if Fanlore has articles about them. If the article exists, add up-to-date information; if the article doesn't exist, create it!

If these don't tickle your fancy, check out esskay's list of Valentine challenges. And you are always welcome to take up a previous challenge at any time.

new challenge: Women Characters, Science Edition!

At long last, a new challenge! The Total Braindump Challenge (from July) is definitely closed, and we now present....

Women Characters, Science Edition!
In celebration of Ada Lovelace Day (October 7), why not create a Fanlore article about your favorite female character who is a scientist, engineer, or mathematician? Tell us about your fannish experiences with these characters — the women themselves, the relationships they’re in (het, lesbian, canonical, fannish, etc.), the fanworks they star in — whatever you can think of! You can stub out a new page, or add a sprinkle of information on an existing page.

Total Braindump Challenge: "The best of times, the worst of times..."

The What's Hot Now challenge is officially closed! (Remember, you are always welcome to take up a previous challenge at any time; check out our previous challenges here.) We now present...

Total Braindump Challenge: "The best of times, the worst of times..."

Pick an event in fandom that, for better or worse, people are still
talking about years (or months) later. If it doesn't yet have an
article on Fanlore, create one, and throw into it everything you can
think of. Tag the page with {{stub}} and possibly also add the words
"total braindump" somewhere near the beginning, so later people know
they're actively encouraged to clean up the page, add details, and
move things around.

Here are some resources to get you started: You can use the event infobox
template
if you're starting a new page. Check out what events already have some coverage in the Fandom Occurrences category. If you want to write about something that happened at a convention, you can also look at the Convention category. Throw your ideas on a page and link to it here, so other people can add their memories, play with the formatting, etc.

New challenge: What's Hot Now

A new Fanlore challenge awaits!

We challenge you to contemplate and document What’s Hot Now -- What’s the most recent fanwork (story, vid, piece of fanart) you’ve seen and loved? Create a page for it and write about why it is awesome.

Remember, you can always go back to the Red Print challenge at any time! We welcome new edits on old challenges :)

New challenge: Red Print

Thanks to all who contributed to our Examples Galore challenge! We really appreciate it :) Remember, you are always welcome to return to the an older challenge at a later date should you be inspired to do so!

Your next mission, should you choose to accept it, is to look up your favorite fandoms on Fanlore, and when you run into a thicket of red words (which means pages are waiting to be created), click on something you can’t believe no one’s written about yet!

You can also find a list of red links (pages that are linked to, but not created yet) at Special:WantedPages.

As always, have fun editing!

New Challenge: Examples Galore!

Many, many thanks to everyone who contributed to the most excellent Women Characters Challenge! There was an amazing outpouring of contributions — too many to even know where to begin highlighting all these incredibly women, their fandoms, and the contributors who wrote about them; check the comments on that challenge post to get a sampling of the great additions! Remember, you're always welcome return to a challenge, so come back and talk about women characters anytime!

For now, it's time for our new challenge:

Examples Galore!

In keeping with April Showers, let's expand the range of examples on Fanlore! A lot of the examples given for fannish tropes and genres documented on Fanlore are fanworks from just a few fandoms. Find a trope or genre you like and add a link to a fanwork from your fandom. April Showers fandoms (first six already available, next group of six soon to come!) and all other fandoms welcome — just expand, expand, expand!

Please do feel free to drop a comment letting us know what you've added, or to ask any questions you may have! This challenge will last through April 25; the clock starts now: ready — set — go!

April Showers on Fanlore and the AO3!

Happy April, everyone! This month, Fanlore and our sister project, the Archive of Our Own, are hosting a joint challenge: April Showers!

On the AO3, users are invited to import their older works: every day of April, a different fandom will be featured, focusing on fandoms with a sizable presence outside the AO3. Check out the AO3 news post for more info on the AO3 side of the challenge!

On Fanlore, contributors are invited to play along and preserve the fannish history and culture of those fandoms! Document the works you uploaded, or record your memories and reminiscences! Talk about the communities you used to be part of (or are still going strong!), the archives and sites and challenges and cons; create profiles for the fans who made an impact on you; revisit fandom debates; or just add whatever tidbits you can think of in that fandom about characters, ships, other fanworks — whatever fannish history and culture you want to share!

Fandoms will be featured in groups of six, one per day. At the end of each group, we'll post to this community with a list of the fandoms that have been featured and resources to help you work on them. We'll be making oral history subpages for each featured fandom, ready and waiting for your memories!

If you'd like to follow the fandoms as they're featured each day, check out the @ao3org Twitter account for daily tweets highlighting each fandom!

You're also welcome to work on any other fandoms in the spirit of April Showers — the more the merrier!

Watch this space for updates; we're looking forward to hearing from you!

New Challenge: Introduce a Friend!

Thank you to everyone who submitted to our Call for Challenge Ideas and for all contributions to Share the Love. Pages created or updates for the Share the Love challenge include Nickey Barnard, Penny Dreadful, Renay, Seventhe, Chaosraven, and KJ — don't hesitate to keep contributing and making your friends' contributions to fandom known! We also had some great challenge ideas — in fact, we're using one of the right now!

Introduce a Friend!

Promote Fanlore participation to your fannish friends! Fanlore benefits most from multiple perspectives, and our contributors are our best advocates. Tell a friend about Fanlore, and encourage them to join in and document their particular corner of fandom, or to add another perspective on existing pages!

Please do feel free to drop a comment letting us know any particular fans, newsletters, or communities that you've alerted, or to ask any questions you may have! This challenge will last through March 14; the clock starts now: ready — set — go!
