Thank you everyone for your participation this year! Your next challenge will be... to think up some awesome challenges!

Do you have some fun ideas for expanding fanlore content? Are there some topics, characters, ships, creators, communities, or entire fandoms that you wish there was more content on? This is your chance to submit challenges! Please feel free to browse the challenge tag to see what kinds of challenges we've done in the past, but don't be afraid to submit something a little different, too! We'll be collecting challenge ideas for future use, and hope to use one of our new submissions for the very next one!

The submission period will last one week, and in the meantime the Share the Love challenge is still open for submissions =D

The Origin Stories challenge is now closed; thanks so much to everyone who contributed and helped us kick off the new year! Fan and user pages updated for this challenge include Kass, Mlle | User:Mlle, User:Espresso_Addict, and Justira — check them out, and don't hesitate to keep contributing to this challenge even though a new one is now available!

But the fan editing is not over, for now we get a chance to spread the love to others! Our new challenge is:

Sharing the Love

Writing about yourself might feel a bit too self-congratulatory... but writing about a friend won't! Do you have a friend or just someone you admire who's done something awesome in fandom? Stub out a page about that person and the awesome fannish things they do!

Please do feel free to drop a comment letting us know what you've added, or to ask any questions you may have! This challenge will last through February 14; the clock starts now; ready — set — go!

Please do spread the word about this challenge if you're so inclined, and have fun!

Thanks so much to everyone who contributed to the First Vid challenge! Pages created for this challenge include Hello, Canadian Actor Bingo, and Only Happy When It Rains; check them out, and remember that you can always respond to older challenges even after new ones have been posted — whatever gets us creating, editing, and contributing with joyous abandon!

And speaking of new challenges, I am super excited to announce the next one! It's a new year, and we have a very fitting theme:

Origin Stories

How did you come into fandom? Did someone show you the way in, or did you find fandom via google? When did you enter fandom? What was your first fandom? What does fandom mean to you?

This week, edit your user or fan page to include the story of how you got here and why you stayed.

Feel free to drop a comment letting us know what you've added! You’ve got two weeks; the clock starts now; ready — set — go!

Please feel free to spread the word about this challenge, and have fun!

We're closing out the First Vid challenge. It sparked new pages on Only Happy When It Rains (XF), Hello (SGA) and Canadian Actor Bingo (6CD). If you created a page in response to this challenge and it's not listed here, drop a comment and let us know.

This is our last challenge of 2010, but we'll be back in 2011 once the new OTW term gets underway, and we promise many more challenges in the new year. (If you have suggestions for challenges that would be fun to respond to, feel free to comment here with those ideas -- we welcome suggestions.)

Thanks for participating, everyone!

A Thousand Ships challenge is now closed! Pages created for the challenge include Eric/Tami from Friday Night Lights, Arthur/Eames from Inception, and Jim/Molly from Sherlock.

Our next challenge is First Vid:
Start a page about the first vid or AMV you ever saw, the one that made you want to see more of them!

This challenge will run for roughly two weeks. Feel free to drop a comment on this post to let us know what you've added.

A Lot of Character challenge is now closed. [personal profile] kass was otherwise engaged, so I have the privilege of introducing our next challenge, A Thousand Ships:

This week, pick a favorite 'ship (from a fandom you're active in now, or from your first fandom, or from a fandom that's underrepresented on Fanlore) and start a page about that ship. Go to ship_manifesto if you need inspiration (and feel free to grab material from there — if you quote a manifesto, give attribution, and add some of your own material around the edges.)

P.S. Epic gen friendships are also welcome!

This challenge will run for roughly two weeks. Feel free to drop a comment on this post to let us know what you've added!

First, an admin announcement: we're tabling the previous challenge ("Front Page Banner") for the time being. Y'all raised some good points and we realized that we needed better guidelines and a longer timeframe for a redesigned logo/banner challenge, so we're calling a halt to that challenge and we'll re-launch it at a later date. Thanks for bearing with us, and we apologize for launching a half-baked challenge idea!

New challenge coming right up! And it is:

A Lot of Character: Pick a favorite character. Make a list of the three or four fanworks which most accurately capture what you love about that character. Then add those fanworks to the page about that character (or, if there isn’t a page yet, start one, and add those fanworks to the new page you’ve just stubbed out.) Then invite your friends to play along, and see what fanworks they add to those pages to complement the ones you thought of!

This will run for two weeks, more or less. Dive in, and have fun!

ETA: We're tabling this challenge for now, having realized that we need better guidelines and a longer timeframe. We'll re-post this challenge later once we've generated the better guidelines etc. Thanks for your patience; a new challenge is coming right up!

Hi all! The First Fandoms challenge is now officially closed; you're welcome to keep posting goodies from your first beloved fandom, but we're moving on to something new: the Front Page Banner challenge.

This is an art challenge. We’re closing in on the end of Fanlore’s Open Beta, and we’re looking for a new banner graphic to go on the Fanlore front page to replace the one that’s there now (the one that says “Fanlore: beta.”) We invite you to make us a new graphic, and post it in the comments here!

(By submitting a graphic to this challenge, you're giving us permission to use that graphic on Fanlore. That's probably obvious, but we wanted to mention it anyway, just to be completely clear.)

This challenge will run for roughly two weeks. Calling all fanartists: please spread the word, and we look forward to seeing what you guys come up with!

Hear ye, hear ye -- the profile-a-comm challenge is now ending! You're welcome to keep profiling communities if you're having fun doing that, but we're hoping you'll be excited about the new challenge too. And that new challenge is:

First Fandom:

What was your first fandom? If it already has a page in Fanlore, go add something -- even if it's just a snip of memory ("[Your_name_here] remembers XYZ...") or a link to a notable fanwork. If it doesn't yet have a page, stub one out! Remember to focus on the fandom, not on canon. And this isn't just for live-action or fiction fandoms -- if your first fandom was anime or RPF or something else entirely, we want those pages, too!

If you need help with templates or setup, feel free to leave a comment on this post and we'll jump in to lend a hand.

This challenge will run for roughly two weeks. Dive in, and enjoy!

The Pink Sparkly Hearts challenge is over! It's time for our next challenge...

Profile-A-Comm

Your mission, should you choose to accept it: pick a community that you belong to and create a page for it on Fanlore. You can use the community template to fill in the basic information; then the fun part, writing about the community and why it’s nifty keen. What are conversations like? Is it active or are posts sporadic? Has it changed over time? Tell us about it!

This challenge will run for roughly two weeks. The community template is provided below for your easy use. And feel free to drop a comment on this post to let us know what you're posting about!

Hi everyone! I'm going to be posting a new challenge here every two weeks for the rest of 2010. We'll all have two weeks to create Fanlore entries in response to this challenge, and then a new challenge will go live. (Of course, you can always respond to older challenges even once newer ones have been posted, but the idea here is to get us creating and editing wiki pages with joy and abandon.) With no further ado, here's the new challenge -- which will run until September 5 or thereabouts.

The Pink Sparkly Hearts Challenge!

What was the first piece of fanfiction you ever fell in love with? Create a page for it and write about why it is awesome. (If you're not into fic, how about the first vid you ever loved? The first piece of fanart? Insert your fanwork of choice here!) The idea here is to create pages for the fanworks around which you want to draw big pink sparkly hearts. You've got two weeks; the clock starts now; ready -- set -- go!

Who's been watching the new season of Doctor Who? I've been pleased, and maybe a little surprised, at how much I've been enjoying Matt Smith's take on the Doctor. I'm sure it doesn't hurt that I'm a bit of a sucker for tweed and bow ties. :)

So I checked out the Doctor Who pages on Fanlore and for a fandom that's been around since the 60's and has had such a massive popular resurgence, those pages need a lot of fleshing out! Go check it out. The online fandom and fanfic subpages are crying for details. What about the Rose wars? How about Donna? We have a pattern for knitting the scarf, but not one for knitting the adipose that was so popular at the art auction at Con.txt a couple of years ago. Any notable vids? How did the tone of the fanfic change while the 10th Doctor was in the midst of his downward spiral of manpain?

There's lot we can do with these pages, both Old School Who fans and New Who fans alike, so let's play with this for a couple of weeks. Pick an area that strikes your fancy and have at it! :)

The Merlin editing group is diving in Saturday, March 27, at noon EDT (4pm GMT) and will continue for 12 hours. We will open up again on Sunday as well. Details here.

Short version: We're gathering on Google to chat and use Googledocs to play with each others' work before posting to the Fanlore Wiki. This will reduce the spammage on "Recently updated pages" and make those unfamiliar with Wiki coding more comfortable.

All are welcome. Email theoldbriarpipe at gmail to be invited into the chat.

(Yes, Frogspace made the lovely suggestion that we use the Fanlore chat, and I was hoping to, but there's no Googledocs equivalent except the Sandbox, which really isn't equivalent at all. So we're doing it off-site. But again, everyone is welcome. It's a big job.)

A bunch of Merlin fans are getting together at [community profile] camelot_fleet this week to discuss what needs to be done to update those pages. We plan to do a huge editing party this coming weekend. Everyone is welcome to join us!

The sad, sad state of the Supernatural page over on Fanlore has already been pointed out, and rightly so! Someone passing through who has, I dunno, lived in cave since 2005, might think this was a fandom for a show people were casually fond of, rather than the massive, incredibly passionate fandom it actually is. And poor Castiel! (I might be a bit single-minded here. *g*) He has no pairing subpages. And I know Misha Collins has a huge following. Spread the word! Let's see if we can flesh this out a bit. :)

[personal profile] cesperanza once said to me that the cold, wet nose test of any fan (using the analogy of an obviously healthy puppy is one with a cold, wet nose) is their enthusiastic attempts to pimp other people into their fandoms. I think the cold, wet nose test of any fandom is the number of challenges, in the forms of fests, exchanges, big bangs, battles or what have you, that the fandom hosts in an effort to enthusiastically encourage participation in the fandom.

So in an attempt gauge our respective fandoms' health, the challenge this week is to create a new page for your fandom called "List of __Challenges" where the blank space will obviously be your fandom's name, and then start compiling lists and links of your fandom's various challenge-type events. You may, if you have a lot, want to sort them by headers, like General Fests & Exchanges, Holiday Specific, Pairing Specific, or whatever you think is appropriate for your fandom. We'll use the Community Profile template for this, like we did for the Newsletters. We would also like you add the [[Category:Challenges]] just to be consistent.

A number of fandom pages on the wiki already have a paragraph or so about some of the challenges in the fandom. If that's the case, just add a line to that paragraph that says something along the lines of "For a more extensive list of challenges, fest and exchanges, see the [[List of__Challenges]]."

This is a big challenge! There's a lot to do. But you won't have to look too hard to find the fandom challenges. We're not far past the tons of holiday fests from the winter holidays and now I'm seeing people starting to get ready for their fandoms' big bang challenges. There's always something happening. So let's see if we can round them up and give them a central home.

I've snagged the idea for this week's challenge, since it will roll through Valentine's Day, from [personal profile] thingswithwings. A couple of days ago she made a post full of "Awww!" where she talked about the various ways emotionally stunted OTPs in her fandoms said, "I love you." For example, in due South, you see a lot of "Partners?" "Partners." I'm spending a lot of time in Merlin right now, and their version seems to be "Idiot." "Prat." ♥ ♥

So what is it that you see, in canon or fanon, that makes your heart melt over how obviously in love your favorite pairing is, even if they're not able to admit it? What's that thing that your fandom points out to new people, saying, "See? That thing they did? So. In. Love." Now go to their pairing page and see if it's described, and if not, stick a paragraph in there explaining it. And if your OTP doesn't have its own page, make one!

And post them here, too! I don't know about you, but I could use a week full of "Awww!" :)

So I was cruising around Fanlore looking at some of the proposals for challenge topics and hit the Newsletter page and saw that it was a stub. And then I looked at the Newletter Communities subpage and saw that it was a sea of red! There are over 100 newsletters listed on the page, but only a handful actually have any information in the wiki. Most are just empty pages. There are links to the actual newsletters associated with almost all of them, which will be helpful, but we really don't want all of the information about these (for me, at least) absolutely critical fannish resources to be dependent on the permanence of an external link!

This should be an easy fix and there are enough fandoms listed, I'm sure there's something for everyone. Let's create proper pages for these newsletters! Here's a handy template that will create the nifty Community Profile box for you. Start with that, and as for the rest, see what you can discover. Who founded it and when? Who maintains it now? Is it inclusive or exclusive? How are they gathering their links? Does it have any particular quirks or controversies? Is the journal defunct? What happened? And if you're in a fandom and you have a newsletter that's not listed, by all means add it!

Let's see what we can get done this week. Next Wednesday, we'll tackle something new. :)
