tumblr meme template

During the Fanlore chat today, we were discussing the need for more documentation of Tumblr fandom, so I made a meme template so that fannish memes on tumblr can have a page. (Please check it out and let me know if there should be more fields, etc.) However, the template still needs a category. Does Category:Memes as a subcategory under Category:Tropes & Genres work?

Existing pages that might belong in the category include Stilinski_Twins, Flower Crown, I Believe in Sherlock Holmes, Caramelldansen and How to Wear Men's Shirts

new templates, new categories

I created some new infobox templates (and categories to go with them). Some of them are in use, some I was unsure about. If you have an opinion on what fields to include, etc., speak now! Or later! But it'll be more work later.

1. Brand-new, never used wiki template, for wiki articles about wikis! (Such as....) Category:Wikis
2. Fanart template, never used. Category:Artworks??
3. Fancomic template, never used. Category:Fan Comics? Or maybe Category:Artworks for now?--I'm not sure how many articles we have.
4. Academic commentary template, for articles about peer-reviewed articles, etc. Used once so far! Category:Academic Commentaries.
5. News Media Commentary template, used once. There was a brief discussion about the wording/scope for this, so the category hasn't been created yet.

Hi folks! I've been tackling one small boulder in the mountain of fansub information not yet on the wiki, and I have a few questions about categories and templates.

( In no particular order... )

An unrelated question: I'm trying to make an internal link to /a/, in case anyone gets brave enough to tackle 4chan-related info. However, I can't get the wiki to show the //. Any wiki gurus out there know the trick?

New templates.

Two new templates are up and open for comment (i.e. these templates are considered works in progress) -- I'm also gradually sorting through the CommunityProfile uses, to make sure each Community article has the right template; whether it be a mailing list, a forum, or an LJ-like community. Helpers are very welcome to dig in, also.

Some news!

Fanlore now has its own copy of the FixBunching template, which lines up block-level items along the left or right margin.

Also added is a SiteTumblr template, for Tumblr pages that are particularly fannishly influential! Like Fanfic Flamingo, hint hint :) This template is a work in progress, so please feel free to suggest changes.

I started some new templates that could use input from others:

Template:Webring
Template:SiteRec

Categories to go with these templates have not yet been created.

In other excitement, although Fanlore now has date categories, brave Doro appears to be the only one working to add them to the 9000 fanworks pages. I believe she has reached "I" now? Other people are welcome to join in. (However, there are plenty of pages in the Chronology/date category hierarchy already. Check it out!)

I mentioned this on the talk page a while ago, but I'd like to remove conventions from Category:Offline_Spaces and define it as "offline spaces other than conventions". Right now it is overwhelmed with conventions and doesn't seem very useful since conventions already have their own category. Plus, Offline_Spaces is a subcategory of Fan Communities, so I suspect it was intended for things like fan clubs. What say you?

Notes on a few Fanlore templates.

First off, I remember that someone asked years ago that the Fiction Writing category be removed from the Archive template since there are fannish archives of things other than fanfic. I think it's time to do something about this, and so far I've come up with a few possible solutions:

1. Create a new Template:ArchiveFiction and attach the Fiction Writing category. Then remove fiction category from Template:ArchiveProfile. Then fix every fiction archive page.

2. Create a new Template:ArchiveFiction and create another category to go with it--Fiction Archives--that will be a subcategory of Archives and Fiction Writing. Then fix every fiction archive page.

3. Remove Fiction Writing category from the existing archive template and don't add archives to the Fiction Writing category at all. Optional: we could make the Archives category a subcat of Fiction Writing, Non-Fiction Writing, Video, Audio, and Visual Art.

My favorite is #2, but of course there are archives that host multiple types of fanworks, so we'd have to manually add the Fiction Archives category to some pages (how many?).

And then I had some thoughts on the Convention template and the Offline Spaces category. I also created a Sandbox notice--please let me know if it makes sense.

Meanwhile, Amy has been working some deep wiki mojo on whole classes of templates and has fixed up the RelatedLinks template.

The fanfiction template is now in use. The Fiction Writing category is currently included in the template, but I've been wondering if we want to do something like the zine category structure and create a special subcategory for individual fanfics. Category:Stories?

I also started a draft for a generic infobox template with see-also fields and no category included. However, the current scope is fan activities (for example, File Sharing), which may be too narrow--would it also work for other topic overview pages like the History of Scanlation?

In other news, users have been talking about moving some sections on the slash page into separate pages. So far, we've got Slash vs. Gay and Slash Controversies.

The Wiki Committee has approved "Tropes & Genres" as a new floating category (a top-level category with no subcategories, like Fanworks and Glossary).

The idea is to group together all the pages that discuss genres, tropes, and trends within fanworks (all types of fanworks--fanfic, art, vids, etc.). There will be a lot of overlap with the Glossary category, but some trope pages are not fannish terms (cyberpunk, unicorns, Animals in Fanworks, Rape in Fanworks, etc.). So this category is also designed to fix the problem of miscategorized and uncategorized trope/genre pages.

Example pages to go in the category: Story Tropes, Slash Tropes, Animals in Fanworks, Cats, Undercover in a Gay Bar, Constructed Reality, Bodyswap, Hurt/Comfort, Slash, Gen, Het, Tentacles, Landscape

Pages that should NOT be included: fanwork formats like Podfic, Fanfiction, Zine, Vid, etc. These belong under Fan Activities

I have created a template to go with the new category. I've had some feedback already, but the template hasn't been used yet, so please let me know if there are major flaws, etc. I tried something new that can be easily changed even after the template is in use: a row containing some pre-programmed links to pages that would otherwise be linked manually in most trope pages (e.g. Story Tropes).

The vid template is now in use if anyone wants to try it out.

So many new zine templates are now in use that I created a guide to go with them.

Another fanwork template idea: Since vids get their own template, why not fanfiction? Any other fields to add to this one?

Amy wrote a nifty timeline help page for creating your own timeline template, like the graph on the Timeline_of_Slashed_Sources page.

May I direct your attention to a few discussions on the wiki? These might benefit from more input.

We've got a draft template for vids that's ready to be used if no one can think of any more/different fields to put in it.

We're also discussing how to divide up the zine category into more manageable chunks.

And Doro has asked about a template for timelines and/or histories.

FYI, I updated all the templates to comply with the no-breadcrumb rule for categories. This means most of the templates no longer appear in the main Template category, which I figured might surprise people who are looking for them. The notices, labels, and infoboxes can now be found in the subcategories. Miscellaneous templates remain in the parent category.

I added a blurb on the main template category page about what "notices," "labels," and "infoboxes" actually are, but I could be wrong--I was extrapolating from the templates that were already in the categories. Check it out:

I also created redirects/shortcuts to get to the infobox and template categories: type "infoboxes" or "templates" into the search box and you will magically end up on the relevant category page! If there's another page outside of the main namespace that you need to consult frequently, but have trouble finding, consider creating a redirect for it.

I've been adding filk albums to fanlore & updating some of the ones already there, and adding filkers to the Filk Music category, and I want to start adding filk companies, and...

There's no "company" template. There's nothing kinda-sorta like a company template.

Help? What goes in a company template?
Name - Date founded - Date ended, if any - Location (address? Or just city/state/nation?) - Media - Fandom(s)? (some don't seem to label well by "fandom") - website -- other stuff?

What categories should companies have?

( Some companies that should have listings )

And now I have to go to work & won't be able to reply to anything until the evening. But I do get notifications of replies & can start putting together a template if I get suggestions.

The user template

Just a quick note of encouragement to all users to complete a quick and easy user page. For one thing, it means your name won't be red anymore! For another, it will help us more accurate gauge our user base, which is always a good thing.

If you don't want to add a lot of information, that's fine. Even just your name is a good starting place.
