Semantic web, linking to and from Wikipedia and Freebase

I was recently reading some stuff about the semantic web, which I've started talking about on my journal, and it occurred to me that a lot of the Fanlore wiki policies are relevant, in terms of how data on fandom is structured and given meaning. I'm still very much at the basic level in this area, but does anyone have any thoughts on how we can link information together usefully while respecting privacy, or on how we can make sure we're not duplicating work that's done by Freebase or Wikipedia in terms of defining source texts for fandoms and making sure we're linking to a definitive source text where appropriate? In some ways it seems kind of similar to the fandom as category policy discussions. I'm also noticing that Fanlore has pages specifically for major pairings, which tend to have the most commonly used fandom name, so doesn't match the AO3 tag canonical name. I think that's right in terms of the aim of both sites, but it might be useful to keep some way of linking the two together.

Isn't that what the redirects are doing? Linking various different pairing names together?

The help page for starting a new page includes a suggestion to create likely redirects when you create a page. Also, when I see a red link for a page I know exists already, I sometimes create a redirect from that link (if it's not a typo).

This page lists all redirects on the wiki.

I tend to create variants as I think of them, so I often make a bunch of redirects along with an article. Like if I make a fanarticle I'll usually redirect all the pseuds, if I make a pairing page I'll redirect both orders and any common smooshed names etc etc.
You can look at all redirects here:
http://fanlore.org/wiki/Special:Listredirects

AFAIK they don't show in categories, as it would be tedious to see a gazillion variants for every entry.

ETA: That redirect list is very inconvenient however since it's not sorted, or maybe chronologically by creation time? It's quite unordered in any case.

I love the idea of cross-referencing tags from Fanlore and AO3, folksonomy for the win!

However, not every variation needs to be set up as a redirect. We should take a look at the web logs and see what gets traffic, do those first. The other versions can be included as synonyms or in the text.
