The other day I was looking at the Anime Music Video article on Fanlore, and facetofcathy suggested bringing it to the attention of the dw comm. Basically, the AMV article contains some interesting stuff, but could always use more, and I get the feeling that it's written at least partly from a vidder perspective. It would be great if AMV fans could review the page, make edits there or just drop a comment here with links, corrections, or their own perspectives. Some sections on the page that could use expansion include "Notable AMVs" (external links to AMVs would be nice; EVEN BETTER would be internal links to new Fanlore pages about AMVs*) and "Contests" (which looks to have been abandoned mid-sentence). A new section to list popular AMV forums, websites, mailing lists, lj comms, etc. would also be helpful. And other stuff I can't even dream of because I don't know enough about AMVs!

*Speaking of fanworks pages, we've got an infobox template for vids, but not for AMVs. Would AMVs need different/more/fewer fields? I can make an AMV template if I know what to put in it.

ETA:An Anime_Music_Video category and template have been created.

[personal profile] starlady has a few AMV meta posts that might be of use.

We do need a separate AMV template, yes. (AMVs are not a "subform" of vids.) I'm not an expert, but copying the vid template options looks fine to me. (Not sure how relevant "format" is.)

*claps* I agree on both. :)

To repeat a question I posed on the AMV talk page:

Slightly tangential to that, there are videos set to music of Kdramas (and likely Jdramas too) like Coffee Prince, and I've seen them referred to as MVs. Is this a sign that they are aesthetically linked to AMVs or am I reading too much into that terminology? Also we need a page for those kinds of fanworks, and I don't know if MV or Music Video is what is "should" be called or if it is something that is fully within vids or AMVs as a form.

Curently the wikilink for MV on the Coffee Prince page reroutes to the vid page and I feel on very shaky ground with that choice. Does anyone familiar with the various forms have an opinion on that?

I don't know about vids versus MVs for Kdramas, Jdramas, etc--I've never actually heard the term before, and I've seen vids for Kdramas in things like Festivids, but my knowledge is on the AMV side. I think it's more likely that the creators of MVs overlaps with creators and viewers of AMVs than of any aesthetics choices. But, again, not an expert opinion here.

I found it when Google suggested Coffee Prince MV.

It looks like MV is used by people posting both in English and in various East Asian languages. It is being used both for fan-made videos of scripted sources and K-pop/J-pop sources. I'm not sure if it is also used for youtube postings of official band videos.

So, could just be a terminology choice, or a separate form. Don't know, and I'll never be able to tell by looking at examples--I can barely articulate why Buffy vs. Edward isn't a vid.

I know that some 'vids' are called AMV at times, just like some AMV can be called simply song videos at times. It happens that the overlapping can be a bit tricky, as I have heard "music videos" for either traditions.

I saw some videos for Kdramas or Jdramas (I apologize for not remember the nationality of the art) and if I recall well they fell into one of the sections of the vidder who otherwise vidded in what could be considered more Western media tradition.

I guess it also depends on the people' background. For example, in France I know this is common for people to call fan videos of any kind/tradition either "AMV" or "the Youtube stuff".

Sorry for the ramble, as this no true expert opinion, though I'm a vidder and a viewer.

The vid template looks okay to adapt for AMVs, imo. I think I'd do:

{{AMV
|AMVtitle=
|creator=
|date=
|format=
|length=
|music=
|genre=
|fandom=
|footage=
|awards=
|externallinks=
}}

I'm iffy on "genre" and on "footage" but not very strongly.

Maybe "category" instead of "genre" for AMVs, to echo the search function on amv.org?

Oo, yeah, that'd definitely be better.

We have a reference to an 'AMV' category -- should it be expanded to 'Anime Music Videos' or 'Anime Music Video'?

I actually think what appears to be the singular is best, linguistically. So I went ahead and created it :)
