I noticed that the Fanlore article is a bit dry. Since we've been working on pages about various OTW projects (Server Naming Festival, 2011 Board Elections), I thought now might be a good time to spiff up the page about Fanlore.

Ideas?

What was the idea behind creating Fanlore? The AO3 is pretty obvious--we own the servers, etc.--but why a wiki?

The conflict with the Fan History Wiki.

Various discussions about Fanlore policy, perhaps? Artwork. The long process of organizing categories.

Fanlore burnout. Criticisms of the wiki.

Fanlore being "less important" to people than the AO3.

Links to Fanlore squee posts.

What else?

Right now, there's a lot of factual info about the wiki, but nothing passionate about it.

This is an excellent idea! Metafandom might be a good starting point for older viewpoints - looks like most of the discussion tagged "wiki" is about the Fan History Wiki (also http://www.delicious.com/metafandom/fanhistory) but the top few posts are Fanlore. The OTW tag might have useful stuff too.

I remember a discussion about the meaning of and history of the term "multimedia" which might be interesting to mention - see Multimedia_(multiple_fandoms) vs Multimedia_(Multiple_Media), and an lj poll by iamsab. I think it's one of the earlier examples of fans from different backgrounds trying to organise the structure and content of the wiki in a way that's inclusive and clear.

Re major projects, I would add Frogspace and co's work on Merlin to the list!
