Thank you to everyone who has participated thus far in Stub September! You added great stuff to multiple pages in the Buffyverse Characters category, added new issues to various gen anthologies, worked on different tropes in fan content, and added details to smaller fandoms. We are so thrilled to see all this great activity on the Recent Changes page!

To help you in expanding even more pages this week, we come bearing gifts!

Or more accurately: a theme!

The Stub September theme this week is Characters!

Maybe you could try expanding stubs created during June Bloom, such as Chris Evans (UK), Jacob Black, or Rahne Sinclair.

Examples of other character pages that are currently stubs include:

and many more! Feel free to browse the stubs, pages that need expansion, and examples wanted categories for other pages that need work.

New editor? See the Intro to Fanlore FAQ, Help:Editing pages, and the formatting cheatsheet for the basics of wiki editing.

Please keep in mind that Fanlore is a wiki about fandom, not canon. A brief overview of the character's canon background information is welcome and encouraged, but the focus of the page should be about fans' engagement with the character. Some ideas to get you started:
  • What are fans' reactions to the character? Is the character well-liked or bashed?
  • Are there any notable meta essays or discussions about the character?
  • Is there any widespread fanon for the character?
  • How commonly does the character appear in fanworks? Is there a popular role or trope for the character?
  • With which other characters (if any) is the character 'shipped?
  • Are there any communities or websites dedicated to the character? Any other online resources?

See the help article on character pages for more information. There is also a sample character page template that you may find useful, but it is not necessary to follow its structure.

Articles on real people that appear as characters in fanworks are treated a little differently on Fanlore, though most of the points above still apply. However, take care to separate "canon" information (about the actual person) from information about the RPF character. See Help:People pages and Help:RPF pages for more information.

For lists of all character articles on Fanlore, see Category:Characters.

You can search within the Stubs category (or any other category) using the "incategory:" parameter.

If you include the term "incategory:Stubs" in your search (i.e., in the search bar at the top-right of any Fanlore page), it will only bring up pages from Category:Stubs. For example, you can search "character incategory:Stubs" to find all stubs that contain the word "character" (note that this is not only character pages).

Alternatively, you can search within another category for the term "stub". For example, "stub incategory:DC_Comics_Characters" finds stubs in Category:DC Comics Characters (note that underscores are required for multiple-word categories).

See Help:Searching for more information.

Check back next week for a new theme! If you have any questions, feel free to comment on this post or to email the Fanlore Gardeners. We also would love to hear about your contributions to the challenge so far in the comments below. Happy editing!

And don't forget! To celebrate Stub September and also provide an opportunity for new editors to ask questions, we will be holding an editing party on Saturday, September 12th at 17:00 UTC (what time is that in my timezone?) in the Fanlore chat room.
