This month is Stub September, and you’re invited! From September 12th through 25th, you can expand short articles on Fanlore to earn party-themed badges in honor of the OTW’s 15th birthday.

But what IS a “stub”? It’s a term we - and other wikis - use to describe a very short page with little to no information on it. Many stubs contain only an introductory sentence or two - but they’re still hugely valuable to Fanlore, as they can all be added to and built on!

Adding a few words is enough to expand a stub - and earn you a badge in Stub September! You can even browse our handy stub category to find pages to add to.

Want to help make more Fanlore pages, but can’t think of a lot to say? You can make a stub and give other editors something to add to! Anyone with a Fanlore account that’s at least four hours old can create a page - check out our Starting a new page Help page to learn more!

There’s five party-themed badges to collect in Stub September; can you earn them all? Learn more about how to participate in our guide to Stub September! If this is your first time editing Fanlore, you can also check out our New Visitor Portal and tutorial pages to learn how to get started.

Happy editing, and if you have any questions, leave a comment and we'll get right back to you!

A banner with an old-school postcard feel; at the top left is the word Fanlore in cursive, then beneath it the word Bingo in chunky capital letters, with a design depicting trees set against a backdrop of mountains underneath a sky with wispy clouds. The word Challenge appears at the bottom right, also in cursive.

Our ever-popular Bingo Challenge returns this year from Tuesday 1st June to Monday 14th June, and new and expert editors alike are invited to take part!

In Fanlore Bingo, editors fill out a 3x3 square bingo card by completing editing tasks, and there are two cards to complete! Check out the Challenge Help page to learn more about taking part, and then grab your Beginner Bingo card or your Expert Bingo card to start the challenge! Each card has more details below it about how to complete the editing tasks. If you're feeling ambitious, you can complete both cards for a Total Blackout...

Questions? Head to the Bingo Challenge talk page and a friendly editor will assist you, leave a comment below this post, or drop a line to the Fanlore Committee!

We just reached a huge milestone on Fanlore: one million edits! And to celebrate, we're running a scavenger hunt contest all week that anyone can enter to win a very special Citrus Scale-themed sticker set and some exclusive badges!

The Citrus Scale sticker set was previously available as an OTW donor premium at the $40 level (as seen in this tweet), but has since been discontinued - now is your chance to get your hands on one! The first person to send in correct answers to all of the scavenger hunt questions below will win the sticker set (this will require you to send us your address, but we won't retain it for any purposes beyond sending you your prize! We can ship to anywhere in the world). The answers to these are found all over Fanlore, so prepare to get hunting!

Every person who sends in a fully correct set of answers will also win an exclusive badge to post to their Fanlore user page, website or profile page, as will everyone who takes part in the hunt (regardless of whether you get all the answers correct)! Do you think you're up to the challenge? Here are the scavenger hunt questions:

1) What year did Fanlore come out of beta?

2) List two tropes that are similar to "Smarm".

3) Name a piece of Anime & Manga meta with a page on Fanlore - if you want, you can create a page yourself to qualify for this answer (it can be a page of any length, as long as the subject is anime/manga meta).

4) What pairing were the first Alpha/Beta/Omega fanworks written for?

5) Which of these questions is NOT in the Fanlore FAQ?
"Why does this wiki exist?"
"Why should I care about fandom history?"
"What is the best way to get started with editing Fanlore?"

6) What is anthropomorfic known as in Japanese fandom?

7) What fandom does "Hanfic" originate from?

8) Name a fandom content purge that took place prior to Strikethrough/Boldthrough.

9) Name an example of Filing Off the Serial Numbers.

10) Why might fans disagree over the definition of a "drabble"?

11) What is the difference between a metavid and vidding meta?

12) My naym is cow
Award I wyn
With AO3
Get rocket pyn
What event in fandom is this meme describing, and who is the author of the poem?

13) Find a doujinshi page on Fanlore that is more than six months old.

Send in your completed answers to wiki@transformativeworks.org, and we will send you back your badge(s) and contact you if you're the winner of the Citrus Scale sticker set! If you have any questions about the scavenger hunt, feel free to comment below.

A banner for Stub September, created in the style of a ticket with 'ADMIT ONE' on one end and a barcode on the other. The main body of the banner reads: Stub September - from Sept 16 to Sept 29, 2019. Tell us about your fandom!

Fanlore is proud to announce the return of our regular event, Stub September, in 2019!

If you've done much browsing of Fanlore you've probably seen some pages marked as "Stubs."

A yellow label that appears on Fanlore pages marked as a stub.

There are currently more than 3300 pages on Fanlore marked as stubs, but with your help, we can take that number down a bit!

So, from September 16th to 29th we'll be running Stub September, a two-week challenge aimed at adding just a little bit more information to some of these short or empty pages. You don't have to be a seasoned Fanlore editor to help us out; we've got all the details you need to participate right here.

We'll also be giving out fabulous badges to participants, designed especially for this challenge by our talented graphic design team.

You can earn a badge by:
  • Adding to a stub (any amount counts!)
  • Expanding a page so that it no longer has a stub flag
  • Creating a new stub
  • Finding a page incorrectly flagged as a stub, and removing/changing the flag.

We even have an extra hidden badge to award to editors who put in a special effort during this challenge!

Good luck and happy editing!

It’s that time again… Get ready for Fanlore’s April Showers challenge! Join us for the event that celebrates fandoms old and new, add your memories and favourite fanworks to Fanlore, and earn some cool badges for your user page!

We’re changing things up slightly this year, with a different editing task for each day of the week, which you can carry out on any of the spotlighted fandom pages for that week. For each editing task that you complete, you’ll earn a badge to display on your user page!

Daily editing tasks:

  • Sunday (Day 1): Add ships to your chosen fandom page
  • Monday (Day 2): Add some fanwork links or recs
  • Tuesday (Day 3): Add links to fan communities
  • Wednesday (Day 4): Add some links to meta or discussions
  • Thursday (Day 5): Add some info about common tropes for that fandom
  • Friday (Day 6): Add some more canon detail to the page
  • Saturday (Day 7): Add some information about fandom and fanon

Here are the fandom pages that you can edit to earn a badge in Week 1! We’ll be featuring a new set of fandom pages each week, so be sure to check back next week for our Week 2 list.

Each fandom will be highlighted on the fanlore_news Twitter and the otw-fanlore Tumblr throughout the week, and you can follow along by tracking the hashtag #FanloreAprilShowers!! But remember, you don’t have to edit a fandom page on the same day that it’s featured to qualify for the challenge. You can carry out the day’s editing task on any of that week’s fandom pages to earn a badge.

If you’re new to Fanlore and don’t know where to start, you can always stop by our New Visitor Portal or talk to a friendly Gardener.

Have fun, and we look forward to seeing you on the wiki!

As April Showers rolls along, the first featured fandoms have been revealed! We invite you to tell us your history, your stories; share your memories and experiences; preserve your fannish culture β€” in these fandoms or in any others!

The fandoms highlighted this week are listed below. Some of these pages are still stubs and can use some TLC; even those that aren't can always benefit from additional fannish perspectives!

April 1st β€” Attack on Titan: Attack on Titan is back! After almost a four year wait, fans are finally getting new episodes, which means new things to add to the Fanlore page. Preserve the #AttackOnTitan fandom before the next Wall falls! (retweet, reblog)

April 2nd β€” Fall Out Boy: #InfinityOnHigh, or infinity on repeat? Fanlore for more information! Help document the fandom that rocked #Bandom! (retweet, reblog)

April 3rd β€” American Girl: Your American Girl taught you about American history, but can you teach others about American Girl fandom history? From Kirsten & Molly to MaryEllen, Melody & Nanea, update #AmericanGirlDoll history on Fanlore! (retweet, reblog)

April 4th β€” Thunderbirds: Thunderbirds are go - to update the Thunderbirds page on Fanlore! Supermarionation and #Thunderbirds. You pull the strings at Fanlore! (retweet, reblog)

April 5th β€” The Road to El Dorado: It might not lead to gold, but the road to update this movie’s page is right here! Learn about #TheRoadtoElDorado on Fanlore, or add your own knowledge to the page? Both. Both is good. (retweet, reblog)

April 6th β€” Critical Role: #CriticalRole page on Fanlore needs your help to document the fandom! How do you want to do this? Vox Machina goes to hell. Updating the Fanlore page isn't even half as intense. (retweet, reblog)

April 7th β€” Ookiku Furikabutte: Even if it's not as a pitcher, I like you! Because you're working hard updating #Oofuri on Fanlore! You don’t need self-confidence to update this Fanlore page! (retweet, reblog)

April 8th β€” The Originals: Dead rise on #TheOriginals. Its Fanlore page could use some of that magic. Help by adding to it. What does the fandom think of season 4 so far? (retweet, reblog)

Remember, you don't need to limit yourself to the featured fandoms! Other fandoms that got some love on Fanlore this week include Mass Effect, Homestuck, 5 Seconds of Summer, Roswell, the McElroy Brothers, Overwatch, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Keep up the great work! \o/

I think we need to set up a Fanlore Account on Tumblr. We already have a Twitter account run by OTW Communications (thank you Pip!) and there is a way for those regular tweets to be automatically sent to a Fanlore Tumblr. I'd be willing to set up the Official Fanlore account on Tumblr and also tweak some of the cross-post settings so that we can mirror either the Tumblr posts here or DW posts like this one on Tumblr .

But we need someone to manage the Tumblr account. It should be a low key affair. I make regular fandom history and Fanlore posts on my tumblr blog which could be reblogged.  The Ask Box could be left open in case anyone wants to touch base via Tumblr. Thee are also periodic OTW announcement posts that might be suitable for reblogging.

Anyone other ideas for this Official Fanlore Tumblr account? Tumblr is a rich visual medium and we have lots of content on Fanlore that would be great for blogging.

Anyone interested?
