On 10 March, Fanlore will be making some changes to its policy on Pre-1995 Fan Name Use in order to bring it in line with our broader Identity Protection policy.

In the days prior to the Internet, some fans who wrote in zines (or contributed to other fanworks) used their real names as opposed to a fan name. The expectation at that time was that fanworks would remain within the fairly closed community of fandom. With respect to this different environment and in order to protect the identity of fans, Fanlore created a policy stating that fanwork authors credited in zines and other fannish publications prior to 1995 should be identified with a first name and last initial (e.g. Mary R. as opposed to Mary Richards).

However, as time went by, it became apparent that a great deal of zine content containing fans’ full names and/or preferred names had already been online for many years, and on many established websites. Additionally, many fans writing prior to 1995 used "real" sounding pseudonyms that did not need to be abbreviated. The policy of abbreviating fans' last names has also caused a great deal of confusion over fan authors who share a first name and last initial. Different early print communities (such as science fiction zines) would often use a first initial and last full name to attribute authors, adding to the confusion.

Because of this, the Fanlore Committee has decided to bring the Pre-1995 Fan Name Use policy in line with the wider Fanlore policy on Identity Protection. Author names on fanworks made prior to 1995 will be recorded on Fanlore as they appeared at the time, but if the fan in question wishes to protect their identity, the Fanlore Committee will replace their name with a first name and last initial (e.g. Mary R.), with initials only (e.g. M.R.), or with a pseudonym of the fan’s choice (e.g. Unnamed Fan X). We are happy to work with fans to find an arrangement that they are comfortable with and that sufficiently protects their identity.

We encourage any fans who created fanworks prior to 1995 (and also fans writing in our "grey area" of 1996-1999) to get in touch if they are concerned about their full name appearing on Fanlore: we will take steps to either redact it, or ensure it is redacted if it is added to the wiki at a later date.

From 10 March onwards, the Pre-1995 Fan Name Use policy will be referred to as Pre-2000 Fan Name Use, in order to better encompass the period before the web was more "open", and will appear as a sub-section on the Identity Policy page.

Any fans who have already requested to have their identity protected on Fanlore do not need to do anything: the Fanlore Committee has kept a record of these requests and will continue to honour them to protect fans' privacy.

For more information on identity protection on Fanlore, please review our Identity Protection policy. If you have any questions about this announcement, or want to make an identity protection request, please reach out to the Fanlore Committee via this link and select "Identity Protection" as the message subject.

A banner showing five cartoon hands adding pieces to a puzzle with 'FanloreProjects' superimposed on top.

Thanks to everyone who took part in our recent International Fanworks Day (IFD) Fanlore Challenge - we had a great event with lots of awesome edits made to Fanlore pages.

On Day 7 of the Fanlore Challenge, we challenged event participants to make edits to pages that are part of a FanloreProject, or to join a FanloreProject themselves and edit multiple pages. But just what are FanloreProjects, anyway?

If you're passionate about a specific fandom topic you would like to see more of, you can join a team of Fanlore contributors to help bring your project to life!

Want more examples of meta about the portrayal of disability in fanfic? Interested in exploring the use of tropes in all 11 seasons of X-Files? Then FanloreProjects are for you!

We already have ten active FanloreProjects that you can join, started up by intrepid Fanlore editors, on topics ranging from sci-fi fandom to Naruto, Tumblr archiving to IT.

If your own fannish interest doesn't feature on the list, consider starting your own! Some advice and guidelines can be found on our About page, and our Help page Starting a FanloreProject contains more detailed step-by-step guidance.

All FanloreProject creators will be awarded a badge that they can display on their profile, and participants will also be awarded a badge for every project that they take part in. To qualify for a Creator badge, simply create your FanloreProject and add it to the list of active FanloreProjects. To qualify for a Participant badge, add yourself to the member list on any FanloreProject and make some edits!

Also, keep an eye on our Tumblr and Twitter accounts, where for the next nine days we'll be spotlighting different pages from our three earliest FanloreProjects: Sci-fi Fandom, X-Files and Meta.

Day 7, February 16th: For our final challenge, edit any page that is part of a FanloreProject. If you’re unsure about what counts, feel free to ask on that project's Talk page or comment below this post.

If these tasks seem too easy for you, there are bonus tasks for more experienced editors on the IFD 2020 Fanlore Challenge Help page, so give those a go! You can qualify for a badge by doing either one of the day’s tasks – or both.

Happy editing, and happy IFD week! Feel free to ask any questions about the challenge in the comments of this post, or contact us on Tumblr or Twitter.

Popular fanmix and fan soundtrack website 8tracks recently announced that it will be shutting down on December 31, 2019. While the site might be available after this date, there's no guarantee it will stay up - so if you're a fanmix or fan soundtrack creator (or have created any type of playlist on 8tracks), now is a very good time to save the data from your playlists or make them available on another site.

What can I do to save my playlists?

If you've used 8tracks at any point, the site will be sending you an email with the playlist name, art, description and track list from your playlist(s), to help you recreate it/them on another site. It's a good idea to make sure that you can still access the email address you used to sign up to 8tracks. Be sure to also check your spam folder for the email if you can’t find it in your inbox.

You can also use the Download Tracklist button in the notes of any playlist to copy all of the information from that playlist, and the "Save playlist to Spotify" button on top of the mix art to save a playlist to Spotify. Note that some of the tracks may be unavailable or not matched to Spotify's catalog, particularly if they are older songs. Please also be aware that if you are saving someone else's playlist, the playlist will not be attributed to the correct author when saving to Spotify - it will be saved under your name.

Other sites that can be used to create and share playlists of songs include Playmoss (a popular alternative to 8tracks) and YouTube.

Archiving links to fanmixes and fan soundtracks

Another very important thing to do is to use the Wayback Machine to archive the links to your favourite fanmixes and fan soundtracks. This can be done even if you don't want to or aren't able to republish the mix on another site.

To do this, enter the URL of the mix in the box next to "Browse History" and select the button to see if it's already archived. If not, you can select "Save this url in the Wayback Machine" to add it to the archive. Be aware that saving playlists in the Wayback Machine will preserve the creator’s name, the description and the cover art, but not the track list - this can only be saved by downloading the text file.

Link your playlists on Fanlore!

Have you made a fanmix or fan soundtrack that you're really proud of? Do you want other fans to be able to enjoy the links to your favourite mixes and soundtracks? Please add the links to Fanlore! You can do this by finding the page for the fandom, ship, character, trope, fic, etc. that you made the mix for and adding it as an example fanwork. Anyone who has an account on Fanlore can edit the wiki - and it's completely free! Follow this link to sign up to Fanlore, and check out our New Visitor Portal to find out how to get started with editing.

It's official! After much anticipation, Fanlore has reached our 50,000 page milestone - and the 50,000th page is Something in Common!

A huge thank you goes out to all the dedicated, passionate editors from all parts of fandom who have helped us reach this milestone. Without you, Fanlore couldn't be the living, breathing record of fandom that it is today.

We've come a long way since Fanlore's first ever page, Die Hard, in August 2008. Fanlore now has thousands of editors who have carried out more than 900,000 edits, big and small, on pages about every corner of fandom. Each one helps us to build a bigger picture of fandom's history, its experiences, its memories and communities.

Our next milestone is one million edits - we hope you'll join us on the quest!

On 16th October, it was revealed that Yahoo! is planning to shut off posting to Yahoo! Groups on 28th October, and permanently wipe all data from Groups on 14th December, in yet another instance of an internet space shutdown that will be hugely detrimental to fans and fan history.

The Organization for Transformative Works is doing everything it can to try and preserve the fannish activity and works on Yahoo! Groups before the shutdown. If you are a member or admin of a Group and want to try and preserve its contents, here are some things you can do.

Contact the OTW's Open Doors project, which works to import at-risk fan archives, if you're the admin of a Yahoo! Group and want to import its fanworks to AO3. If you're not the admin of a Yahoo! Group, you can still publish your own fanworks to AO3 - but the permission of a group admin is needed in order to import all the fanworks associated with a Group.

Create a page for the Group on Fanlore. Anyone can edit Fanlore and it's completely free - you just need to sign up for an account first. Once you have, you'll need to wait four hours before you can create any new pages - this is a precaution against spam accounts. This tutorial will help you get started with editing, and this article will give you more information on how to start a new page.

If you're not confident with making a new page from scratch or want one created before the four hours are up, you can get in touch via our contact form (select "Editing Help" as the message subject) and we will be more than happy to make one that you can edit.

What sort of thing should I put on a Fanlore page about my Group?

You can record anything you like on Fanlore that you think is relevant to fandom and is important to preserve - but here are some suggestions for information that might be useful:
  • Number of members (from when the Group was most active, if it is no longer active)
  • Last post date
  • The information from your About Group page
  • Number of messages overall
  • Whether the group was public or accessible to members only
  • Fun facts, like the subject of the first and last posts
  • The FAQs
  • A screencap of the About page
  • The Mailing List template (which goes at the top of the page)
Here are some examples of Yahoo! Groups pages on Fanlore that you can use for inspiration:
Please note that anyone can edit pages on Fanlore, so the page you create won't stay exactly the same after you create it (but it will receive great additions from other editors!).

Create a Fanlore user page. If you're worried about friends from Groups being able to find you or your work elsewhere, you can create a user page on Fanlore with any fannish handles, hangouts, and other info that you want to share. Make sure to use the user profile template and check out this help page for more information on setting up your user page.

Archive your mailing list data. Fanlore gardener Morgan Dawn has created a post on Dreamwidth with ways that you can migrate or preserve data from Yahoo! mailing lists - check it out and feel free to add suggestions in the comments.

If you have any questions, problems, or just want to know more about Fanlore, please get in touch!

A banner for Stub September, created in the style of a ticket with 'ADMIT ONE' on one end and a barcode on the other. The main body of the banner reads: Stub September - from Sept 16 to Sept 29, 2019. Tell us about your fandom!

Fanlore is proud to announce the return of our regular event, Stub September, in 2019!

If you've done much browsing of Fanlore you've probably seen some pages marked as "Stubs."

A yellow label that appears on Fanlore pages marked as a stub.

There are currently more than 3300 pages on Fanlore marked as stubs, but with your help, we can take that number down a bit!

So, from September 16th to 29th we'll be running Stub September, a two-week challenge aimed at adding just a little bit more information to some of these short or empty pages. You don't have to be a seasoned Fanlore editor to help us out; we've got all the details you need to participate right here.

We'll also be giving out fabulous badges to participants, designed especially for this challenge by our talented graphic design team.

You can earn a badge by:
  • Adding to a stub (any amount counts!)
  • Expanding a page so that it no longer has a stub flag
  • Creating a new stub
  • Finding a page incorrectly flagged as a stub, and removing/changing the flag.

We even have an extra hidden badge to award to editors who put in a special effort during this challenge!

Good luck and happy editing!

We’re changing things up slightly this year, with a different editing task for each day of the week, which you can carry out on any of the spotlighted fandom pages for that week. For each editing task that you complete, you’ll earn a badge to display on your user page!

Daily editing tasks:

  • Sunday (Day 1): Add ships to your chosen fandom page
  • Monday (Day 2): Add some fanwork links or recs
  • Tuesday (Day 3): Add links to fan communities
  • Wednesday (Day 4): Add some links to meta or discussions
  • Thursday (Day 5): Add some info about common tropes for that fandom
  • Friday (Day 6): Add some more canon detail to the page
  • Saturday (Day 7): Add some information about fandom and fanon

Here are the fandom pages that you can edit to earn a badge in Week 1! We’ll be featuring a new set of fandom pages each week, so be sure to check back next week for our Week 2 list.

Each fandom will be highlighted on the fanlore_news Twitter and the otw-fanlore Tumblr throughout the week, and you can follow along by tracking the hashtag #FanloreAprilShowers!! But remember, you don’t have to edit a fandom page on the same day that it’s featured to qualify for the challenge. You can carry out the day’s editing task on any of that week’s fandom pages to earn a badge.

If you’re new to Fanlore and don’t know where to start, you can always stop by our New Visitor Portal or talk to a friendly Gardener.

Have fun, and we look forward to seeing you on the wiki!

Fanlore is recruiting gardeners to help us with Fanlore!

Do you like writing about fandom? Gardeners are editors who work on Fanlore and take additional responsibilities regarding the wiki’s maintenance. In addition to adding content themselves, they make sure text isn’t deleted indiscriminately and tidy up after other editors, to help new content better fit the wiki’s guidelines. They can also participate in internal discussions about Fanlore events, policies, and documentation. No technical experience is required—you just need to know and love Fanlore, both as a user and an editor. If that sounds like you, come and join us!

Apply on the volunteering page! Applications are due 19 July 23:59 UTC

As mentioned in some of our updates from earlier this year, we've updated the Fanlore main page! We hope this version helps new users find help and other relevant info more easily. The design change is still very much open to suggestions — if you have ideas, please add a comment to the talk page or contact us via email.

We're still working on three sections we'd like to add to the new main page. First, a 'help wanted' section will link a few stubs that need work and rotate regularly. Next, 'featured article' and 'featured image' sections, which will spotlight each week one article that editors deem thorough and helpful enough and one image with interesting description and source information.

Here's the process we're considering for the nomination and election of featured articles and images. Please let us know what you think via talk page comment or email!

i've noticed a lot of link rot, especially since the recent changes at LJ... links are either dead, or link to posts that are now locked (friends or private).  Is there an automated spider/robot to find these links, or do we need to manually flag them... and once identified, what can we do to fill in the info that is now lost?

Fanlore will be adopting a DMCA policy similar to Wikipedia's. This policy does not significantly change Fanlore's existing policies, but simply protects Fanlore from money damages and presents copyright holders with an additional recourse if they believe their work is being infringed.

What is the DMCA?

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) is part of US copyright law, 17 U.S.C. §512. Compliance with the DMCA protects us from money damages in any case where someone posted infringing content on Fanlore or AO3, as long as we took down that content when properly notified about it.

What changes?

The DMCA provides an alternative option for a copyright holder who believes their work is being infringed on Fanlore. It does not change our policies regarding the use of copyrighted material on Fanlore (see Fanlore:Copyright). We will still decline to remove noninfringing, transformative or fair use content. We already ban copyright infringement, and may permanently suspend a user who repeatedly posts infringing materials on Fanlore.

Copyright holders do not need to file a formal DMCA takedown notice to contest the use of their material on Fanlore, and are encouraged to seek resolution by sending an informal request to the Fanlore Committee.

Why would Fanlore want to do this, if it is going to continue looking at fair use?

To put it briefly, having a DMCA policy makes it easier to shake off trolls. For copyright owners/businesses just interested in demanding thousands of dollars, it's not worth sending us threatening letters if we have a DMCA policy, since we are protected against money damages.

Doesn't the DMCA require websites to take down content regardless of fair use?

That's how most providers, most of the time, implement it, because that's the cheapest way to do it, and most providers don't have ideological commitments to fair use that outweigh their desires to save money. Wikipedia, however, has a DMCA policy and a commitment to fair use, and follows the policy we are adopting. We believe that we can remain committed to fair use while providing a streamlined way to address true infringements.

The Policy: http://fanlore.org/wiki/Fanlore:DMCA_Policy

The policy will go into effect in two weeks. During this time you are invited to voice any concerns you have with the wording of the policy, e.g. if something is unclear. Note that we will not change the content of the policy.
