What the Wiki committee did in March

The Wiki committee is very happy to welcome three new staffers! Highlander_II, SoyAlex, and Squidgie joined us in our latest round of recruitment.
Introductions below the cut. )

The committee also has a new Board liaison, Soledad Griffin. We'll do our best to utilize her experience as chair of Internationalization & Outreach.

In addition to recruitment, we prepared for April Showers, a month-long event involving both Fanlore and AO3 during which various fandoms will be highlighted, To kick off the challenge, we will have an editing chat this Saturday, April 4, at 4pm UTC. See this post for more details.

Systems also performed some server maintenance in March; Fanlore may experience brief periods of downtime between 8am to 8pm UTC on Friday, April 3rd (when is that in my timezone?) in order to complete it.

Now that we have a bigger team we're busy brainstorming what else we'll be able to do, and we're excited about the possibilities.

We had a relatively quiet November, with only a handful of outside requests and issues. However, we have several important staffing announcements:

We're very happy to announce that jsparc will serve as co-chair of the Wiki committee alongside Tiyire. jsparc joined the Wiki committee last year and has been a Fanlore editor (as User:Sparcicle) since 2010. Functionally, this doesn't really change anything about the way the committee works, but we are discussing ways to create a clearer internal structure in the not too distant future.

We also have a lovely new Communications liaison, Pip! Keep a look out for Pip on the fanlore_news Twitter.

Lastly, we are sorry to announce the retirement of Willowcabins from the Wiki committee. The committee currently has seven members, plus two liaisons. You can see the full committee here.

In December, we have several behind-the-scenes projects to finish up before the new year, and will continue to work on improving our internal structure and documentation as well as dealing with whatever outside requests we get.

Hello everyone, my name is Tuulia and I have joined the committee on May 2012, so guess I'm the newest addition in the team *waves*.
I just wanted to drop by, say hello and tell something about me, so here I go:

Like I already said, my name is Tuulia, I'm 27 years old woman from Finland. I took a break from fandom world in early 2010, because of my health issues and now I'm making comeback, so only fandom I'm familiar with is American Idol / Adam Lambert RPF, but I'm eager to learn about others too. I love watching Pretty Little Liars, Criminal Minds, NCIS, some reality shows like The Biggest Loser, American Idol and The Voice. Jersey Shore and that kind of reality tv is not for me, though. When it comes to music, I'm country girl by heart and I really love old country like Johnny Cash. Reba and Loretta Lynn, but also new country like Miranda Lambert, Lauren Alaina, Carrie Underwood etc. I do listen other kind of music too, but country is my main genre.

I'm more than happy to be a part of Wiki Committee and I'm here for you guys too, if there's some problems etc, I try my best to solve them, just like other Committee members does. Right now I'm busy with testing, but I'm online almost 24/7 so feel free to say hi, if you want to (:

(I'm bad with intros.)

It's the middle of 2011, and the Fanlore wiki committee is feeling the need for some new energy and new enthusiasm. We're also short on members, so we're putting out a call: we are looking for more fans to join the Fanlore Wiki Committee!

What's the wiki committee, exactly? The wiki committee is a group of volunteers which works to keep Fanlore up and running.

What projects is the wiki committee working on? One of our big areas of focus this year is trying to increase fannish diversity on the wiki, and on outreach to fan communities which are (so far) under-represented on Fanlore. Lately we've also been working on shifting how categories work on the wiki.

Do I already have to be an OTW volunteer in order to join the wiki committee? Nope! We welcome anyone who wants to join the committee, whether or not that person is already an OTW staffer/volunteer. (Becoming an OTW staffer/volunteer is easy, we promise.)

What's the time commitment? The wiki committee usually meets via chat for one or two hours every two weeks. We do the rest of our work via email and via Basecamp, the website used by all of the OTW committees to work collaboratively on our various projects.

I don't know how to edit wiki pages, is that a problem? Not at all. We can teach you! And also, some of our work (especially the outreach work) doesn't involve actual wiki editing at all.

Are you looking for any skills in particular? We could definitely use some CSS experts; we're also especially interested in folks who are enthusiastic about helping us to reach out to communities currently under-represented on the wiki.

I think I'm interested. What do I do? Drop a comment on this post or contact us (here's a link to the webform where you can contact us) and we'll get back to you asap!

I don't have the time for this, but I know someone else who might. Feel free to spread the word in your own journal or via email to anyone you think would be a good fit.

Wiki has had a very busy month! As most people already know, the Wiki committee welcomed new member [personal profile] aethel, who has been doing amazing work with our help pages. We have posted two new policies. The Fandoms as Category Policy is now final, and we have begun the process of creating the new categories and links to go along with that. The Image Policy has been posted as a draft on the wiki and here for comments for the last week. We've received a ton of good feedback on the policy and it's now headed back to the drawing board for revisions based on that feedback.

We wanted to let everyone know that even though there hasn't been a lot of activity here lately, we're still working on things.

Last month one of our members had to step down for RL work reasons. We're pleased to announce that [personal profile] aethel has joined the wiki committee to fill the vacancy.

We're delighted to have her!

Since I just gave this report at an OTW meeting, I thought I would post it here, too. :)

The Wiki Committee is mostly new this year. Our Chair, [personal profile] meri_oddities, is our only member who served the entirety of last year. [personal profile] christycorr joined last summer and [personal profile] cin1607, [personal profile] cordelia_v, and Evelyn Brown are entirely new. We've had a very busy first month!

We've asked Systems to install the Sphinx search engine, as our research has shown that it's the best system available to us now. We are currently working on developing a test plan to test the search engine once it's been installed.

A draft of the "Major Fandoms as Categories" policy has been completed and is ready for Board review, and we've also drafted a policy on images posted to Fanlore (focusing particularly on the question of copyrighted images and explicit images) and this draft has been sent to Legal and the Board for approval.

We're attempting to post regular themes or challenges on the [community profile] fanlore community to encourage and focus participation. Some of these have been more successful than others, but we'll keep working on it, so bear with us. *g*

Hey there! [livejournal.com profile] mrsvelvetears and [personal profile] oxymora have joined the Fanlore staff—they volunteered to rewrite and flesh out the Help and Policy pages, making them more thorough and user-friendly.

We're looking forward to plenty of debates on all sorts of structure and organization matters with you all—Fanlore's bound to grow even more efficient and tidy once they're done. Welcome, Anne and Kerstin! Good luck, and get ready for a lot of work! :)
