It's starting to get down to the wire on rescuing Geocities pages -- I think the purge has already started, given some pages I suddenly can't find -- and there's a staggering amount that hasn't been done yet.

So I thought maybe it would be good to have a post where people could at least leave links to Geocities pages, maybe with a very short description of what they are, so wiki editors would have a starting place. (Links to screencaps of existing pages would also be awesome, so those could be uploaded to Fanlore later, but that would be icing.)

That way, even if not everything gets done, we have a chance of being able to find these pages on the Wayback Machine later -- once we lose the links, we've lost our chance.

I'm already starting to see this:

Do you know if anything has been done with these ones yet? I noticed it was posted in April and Open Doors had it by July.

I'm listing all the links in the comments over here (http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AtkQF_DFcuILdGswaXRqdkVfekNLdVNXc0o5YzFVSFE&hl=en) to keep track of what I'm doing, but I don't want to duplicate other efforts -- because man, that is a *long list*.

I don't think so! The archive can't save fic unless an author or authorIZED person requests it, alas, but anyone can screencap and save on fanlore, which is not nearly as good but...its better than nothing!!!

I went through my entire delicious looking for geocities links. Plus, remember when people used to put up a "links" page on their webpage? Yeah, I have no idea who most of these people are. Or why they object so strongly to putting an email address somewhere easily locatable. Good times.

Justin Glasser's fic is all at Gossamer, except for a fic called "Kevin." I am assuming someone has it saved or archived somewhere else but if I can't find it, I'll save it myself. Two of his sister's stories are missing from Gossamer, too. The email address is dead, naturally.
Monday, September 14th, 2009 05:26 am (UTC)
He has a current site with a current e-mail address. I have the link somewhere. Anyway, there's a note on his site saying that he hopes to eventually archive his XF stuff. I did e-mail him, but I haven't received a response.
Monday, September 14th, 2009 05:40 am (UTC)
So he has another website but doesn't have any of his XF fic on it? And he never bothered to put his new email address on his old site. Why am I not surprised? Maybe we should just ask him to put the missing fics at Gossamer and be done with it.

Don't mind me. I'm just going out of my mind, is all. There are already so many things disappearing; for a compulsive packrat-type like me, it is very crazy-making.
Monday, September 14th, 2009 05:56 am (UTC)
So he has another website but doesn't have any of his XF fic on it?

Got it in one.

Maybe we should just ask him to put the missing fics at Gossamer and be done with it.

Yeah, I tried that. Nothing.

(I dug up the link; it's here if anyone needs it.)
Monday, September 14th, 2009 06:06 am (UTC)
I wonder if we submitted the fic to Gossamer ourselves if anyone would notice. Or care. Do you think I could impersonate him? Maybe I could create an new alternate identity?

Just kidding.

Kind of.

Oh. Like everyone else in the universe, he is on Live Journal. Everyone from XF fandom (except for a handful of people) is, and we just keep finding them. How did you run into this guy? Friend of a friend of a friend?

This is Perpetual Motion. Firstly, thanks for trying to save my site. Secondly, I managed to get everything off it that wasn't on the new (soon to be old) site right before geocities shut down. I'm currently moving all my works here:

perpetfic.summer-sparrow.net

And about 99% of all my stuff is currently here:

perpetfic.googlepages.com

I'm moving off googlepages because they're getting ready to switch to googlesites, and I hate googlesites.

All I lost were a few story summaries, luckily. I'm hoping everyone else was as lucky as well.

I am also wondering what is being done with these links? Are the authors/archivists being sought out to offer them beta accounts/assistance saving their page, or are the pages just being fanlored/waybacked? I tried to find email address for all the ones I picked up, but I don't even know if that's useful to you. The Geocities Rescue Project has not been advertised, and most of these pages are quite old; many owners will not have heard of it.

It sounds like you are pretty snowed under, if you need more volunteers maybe you could say exactly what needs doing? i.e. hunting down email address for authors/archivists and sending out a formletter, posting about the GRP in various places, taking screencaps of a list of websites, etc. I think a lot of people feel more comfortable volunteering to do a specific thing (by a lot of people, I mean: me). I mean, I could do that stuff, if it was stuff you needed doing, but I am not interested in figuring out fanlore atm.

I went and started on Fanlore earlier today anyway, despite my best intentions, and spent hours documenting one site, so I begin to see the *scale* of the project.

But I don't know how you're keeping track of what's already been done. I know it might be more work but a googlespreadsheet or the like with all the sites to be recorded/people to be contacted would be really useful, so the same thing isn't done twice and stuff doesn't get left out. I could start one of everything posted here so far if you want.

I thought maybe contacting the mods of fandom newsletters (these ones http://fanlore.org/wiki/Newsletter/Newsletter_Communities) and the like, and asking them to post a PSA? Do you have a standard announcement or do I just make something up?

I also have had a look at the Geocities Rescue Project page, and it is a little bare. I think if you don't want to be explaining the same thing to people over and over again, it could really use some expansion on exactly how to document a site on Fanlore, rather than just "contact open doors", and maybe more of the rescued pages and a link to here. People might be more willing to drop links than email.

Here's a fan fiction author site that I am pretty sure won't be moved because the writer doesn't actually exist. It's a pseudonym invented by a group of The X-Files fan fiction writers who, rumor has it, were all staying at the Luxor in Los Vegas, Nevada at the time. RivkaT has claimed one, but she isn't saying who the other writers are. I wasn't around at the time but I have it on good authority that drama ensued when some readers discovered that AnubisLM was not one writer, but was instead a consortium.

http://www.geocities.com/Pipeline/Cliff/8873/

Look at the artwork for Sore Luck at the Luxor. Also, maybe it's just a coincidence but all of the wheels on the title page for the site have an "X" on them.

http://www.geocities.com/Pipeline/Cliff/8873/SoreLuck.html

All of the links are even still intact.
I am so depressed now.

Moving on.

How about an an animated gif of Mulder and Scully from 1999? 0r maybe 2000? Or?
http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Zone/2095/xfdance2.html
There has to be a way to save this stuff. This is from a site called The X-Files Finis Romantics Society, which shut down at the end of season 8, I think, in 2001. There is still a lot of stuff intact there, too, although some of the picture files are already missing. They are on wayback, though.

http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Zone/2095/

Then there is The Oncology Ward Fan Fiction Archive, devoted to fic about Special Agent Dana Scully's cancer. All of the links for it are already down but here is the site on wayback. I know a person who is saving the fic from this, but as a novice XF fandom history buff, I really want this saved at Fanlore, too.

http://web.archive.org/web/19990203001708/http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Zone/2095/oncology.html

It looks like The X-Files fandom might have had its own web address at Geocities? Area 51? Huh.

I would like to help out any way that I could, but I need more direction. I am an internet novice by comparison to most people here, I think.

I will come back with more links later.

http://www.geocities.com/isthatplop/
This site is another priority for me. One of the site's owners is a friend and I would try to save it save it for that reason alone. Also, there are just not enough funny stories in XF fandom.

The other thing I have been doing is putting the sites in the wayback machine to see if there is already a good crawl for it, if not, I put it in the queue to be redone. That is a tedious task.

So that isn't so bad, right? Then I have to look at the author sites. Next week, maybe?

After that I thought I might work on some Buffy sites. Not my fandom but I know where there are a lot of links on geocities.

Hi,

I am the webmaster of the NewsRadio FanFic Archive hosted at the Geocities Television City neighborhood (
http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/Lot/2701/). I have already taken liberties to preserve my page by submitting it for inclusion in the Internet Archive Wayback Machine Geocities Preservation sweep, and I've copied it to Angelfire (http://newsradiofanfic.angelfire.com/) so that I may continue to update it in the future. Please feel free to document my fanfic site as you see fit, since the stories therein constitute an important part of television fanfic history, and all contributing authors deserve to have their work preserved for posterity.

Sincerely,

Site: Auron/Lulu Shrine (http://www.geocities.com/auronlu), a resource to help fans of this obscure pairing locate and enjoy all the fanwork out there: fanfiction, fanart, cosplay, etc.
This site is mine. I'm going to re-host it somewhere; I just need to decide where.

2. There is a similar, older Auron/Lulu fansite on Geocities which is no longer maintained, and is certainly going to vanish:
http://www.geocities.com/kiminy_2000/fanart.html
http://www.geocities.com/kiminy_2000/fanfic.html

I can't figure out how to screencap the whole thing. I'll submit it to the Wayback Machine, but that's liable to skip the graphics.
Sunday, September 27th, 2009 03:05 am (UTC)
Old dog, new tricks...

1. I'll worry about my own site tomorrow.
2. I've figured out how to screencap, I've downloaded a complete archive of the second Auron/Lulu site I mentioned above, and I've created a Fanlore page for it: http://fanlore.org/wiki/AuLu_(Geocities_Fansite)

Problem: When I created an internal wiki link to that entry from here:
http://fanlore.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_X/Auron/Lulu
the link shows extraneous brackets, like this: [| AuLu]. I think the parentheses in the title are causing problems.

Which means I need to change AuLu_(Geocities_Fansite) to AuLu_Geocities_Fansite. Have I screwed up? I don't see a way to rename an article.

(I can't just title the Wiki entry AuLu, because there's a totally separate Livejournal Community by that name, and it makes no sense to use the Wiki entry for a dead site instead of an active one.)

D'oh! Forgot. This was my first day creating Wiki entries, so I'm still getting the code down. Thanks for the fix!

I've now transferred http://www.geocities.com/auronlu (my own fandom site) to:
http://auronlu.istad.org/aulu-shrine

I'll create a Fanlore entry for that site too, then enter both of 'em in the Big List.

Thank you for providing all these resources!
