Hello everyone, my name is Tuulia and I have joined the committee on May 2012, so guess I'm the newest addition in the team *waves*.
I just wanted to drop by, say hello and tell something about me, so here I go:

Like I already said, my name is Tuulia, I'm 27 years old woman from Finland. I took a break from fandom world in early 2010, because of my health issues and now I'm making comeback, so only fandom I'm familiar with is American Idol / Adam Lambert RPF, but I'm eager to learn about others too. I love watching Pretty Little Liars, Criminal Minds, NCIS, some reality shows like The Biggest Loser, American Idol and The Voice. Jersey Shore and that kind of reality tv is not for me, though. When it comes to music, I'm country girl by heart and I really love old country like Johnny Cash. Reba and Loretta Lynn, but also new country like Miranda Lambert, Lauren Alaina, Carrie Underwood etc. I do listen other kind of music too, but country is my main genre.

I'm more than happy to be a part of Wiki Committee and I'm here for you guys too, if there's some problems etc, I try my best to solve them, just like other Committee members does. Right now I'm busy with testing, but I'm online almost 24/7 so feel free to say hi, if you want to (:

(I'm bad with intros.)

ETA June 29: Check out the follow-up post listing categories created so far.

Every Fanlore article that documents a particular fanwork is currently listed in the Fanworks category. This category contains 11,000 articles and counting, so it's not very useful for browsing. Fanlore editors have been discussing the possibility of adding subcategories to the Fanworks category for some time now. So the Wiki Committee put together a list of some potential subcategories, some of which already exist on the wiki and can be cross-categorized under Fanworks:

Category:Fanworks (existing)
* Category:Doujinshi (existing)
* Category:Fanfiction
* Category:Vids
* Category:Zines (existing) - create a new cat called "Zine Fandom" to house non-zine pages; current usage of category is mixed
* Category:Artworks
** Category:Zine Covers
** Category:Doujinshi Covers
** Category:Manips
** Category:Icons
** Category:Banners
** ?

What do you think?

Notes:
1. We don't necessarily need a category for every single type of fanwork (or the Fanworks category will be empty), but we should create categories for types of fanworks with a lot of Fanlore content. We can always add more fanwork types later.
1a. There is a lot of material about fanart on the wiki, so more art subcategories would probably be a good idea. What is the best way to group fanart?
1b. We are thinking that the proposed "Vids" category would also be a subcategory under Vidding and would not include AMVs. There is a mixed-use Anime_Music_Video category, but it still has only six pages. :(
2. Except for the fanart, moving pages from the Fanworks category to the subcategories should be relatively easy because we can add the categories to the infobox templates instead of to each individual page.
3. Most of the new categories can be cross-categorized under the relevant fan activity cat. For example, Category:Fanfiction could appear under both Category:Fanworks and Category:Fiction Writing.

It came and went, maybe last week, perhaps the week before, but at some point, Fanlore passed the 20,000 article mark! Congratulations to us!

Advise?

When I, and others, take the time and energy to ban those constant spammers, one by one, is it doing any good? Or is it simply wasted energy that makes an unsightly mess?

The four-hour ban thing that prohibits anyone making a new account and a new entry right away seems to be doing a stellar job of stopping actual vandalism and spam crap, so the the genuine spam *content* is very low now.

But the new fake new accounts are demoralizing, ugly, skew our stats, and make me feel like a helpless chump. I also live in fear that I'm going to accidently ban a real fan. The spam also seem to be increasing. I'd thought that by "tagging" with a ban would at least identify them for possible purposes of knowing more about their sources and tactics, and in the end, assist with their demise. But I'm thinking it's all for nothing.

Should we just leave them be? Or continue with our constant, and exhausting, whack-a-rat?

And, is there any other techy stuff/help on the horizon that can help curb these weasels?

FortuneCity - an early free website went down suddenly in early May, taking with it a number of historical fandom websites. As with Geocities, there is an unofficial effort underway to at least document the URLs of the websites. With the URLs in hand, websites can  be resurrected  by plugging the URL into the WayBack Machine.  But first we need to record the URLs - the Google cached versions will soon go away (some are already gone). More about this here

If you want to help, head over to the Google spreadsheet,* claim a fandom, read the instructions (second tab, lower left corner) and pitch in.   If you don’t have time to grab the URLs from Google, we definitely need help adding the ones we have gathered to the FortuneCity Fanlore page.

Come on fandom. We cannot afford to lose fannish works of art like The A-Team Coloring Book.

*Full link to the Google Spreadsheet is here.

Edited to note
: We're putting search tips on the Instructions tab (look for the tab in the lower left corner). Scroll down to read all the notes/tips/suggestions.

Edited to add: If you do screencap pages, focus on pages that are not in the Wayback Machine. You can run the URL through the WayBack machine here.  If you need help getting the screncaps onto Fanlore send me an email or leave a note here with the number of screencaps and a way to contact you. I'll pass the info on up to the Wiki Committee since organizing a larger scale Fanlore data entry project is beyond our scope.

Edited to add
: If you want to screencap missing artwork or images on a website:

For some cached Google sites, the images no longer show up even though the text will appear. The images are still in Google however. Here is a method to find them – and screencap if needed. Most often handy for archiving a fan artists website that has just gone offline.

Step 1: Google:
Site:fortunecity.com/websiteURL

Step 2: Click on Images (to the left on Google on my screen) to show just the images on that website

Step 3: You can screencap whatever images are still there using whatever program works on your computer.

Example: http://fanlore.org/wiki/File:Zawiah_google_screencap.png

Edited to note: there are a lot of old school anime fandoms on FortuneCity. If you know of anime fans or anime fan communities that might like to help, please spread the word. If a fandom is not listed on the Google spreadsheet, just go ahead and add it and claim it.

Hi, quick overenthusiastic promo from random editor here:

http://transformativeworks.org/announcing-otw-community-survey

So far the survey does not seem to have been officially advertised anywhere but on the OTW parent site and its specific DW/LJ, but the survey is relevant to people who love Fanlore (and other OTW projects) too but may not subscribe to [community profile] otw_news or visit the OTW parent site that often.

To copypasta from the official post:

"What language(s) do you use in fannish or fandom contexts?" "Have you ever used the Fanlore Wiki?" "How did you first hear about the OTW?" Read more... )

I lost the URL, so I am reposting it here so I can (hopefully) find it again.  This is a draft/beta form to help new users create their own User page on Fanlore so they can start editing. It is basically "fill in the box", click "create code" and then copy and paste the code to your new user page.  You can find it here:  http://tinyURL.com/fanlore-profile

A big thank you to [personal profile] kylara   for putting the form together. I've handed it out a few times and have received good feedback from new users.

Wiki editing is fun and a fannish activity like any other. Sharing and discussing what we love is part of what we do as fans, and there are many fans who might love Fanlore if they had the chance to get to know the wiki and the community surrounding it. Right now doing that on Fanlore is difficult for people new to wiki editing, and even experienced editors sometimes feel alone in what they are doing.

Therefore, there is one thing we hope to get off the ground this year, and it’s one many of you have asked for: a wiki forum.

It could be a place where people:

- introduce themselves / get to know one another / chat informally
- ask questions about wiki editing, and answer one anothers’ questions
- collaborate/brainstorm on and squee about wiki pages
- ask questions about Fanlore policies, and receive answers from Fanlore Wiki Committee members
- find previously answered questions without having to de-lurk

Since late last term, there have also been discussions within the OTW (our parent organization) about establishing public org-wide forums and how to incorporate the desired Fanlore forum into that structure. But rather than wait on org-wide forums, we thought Fanlore could more quickly and easily set up a forum hosted by a third party.

Currently, we are looking at Vanilla Forums for hosting. It has several advantages: you could sign in with other accounts (twitter, google, fb), we could have a custom domain name, and we would be able to move it to our own servers without losing content if we needed to. Most importantly, it appears to be the only viable option for accessible forum software, but if someone familiar with accessibility issues can offer alternative suggestions, please let us know.

Once we have a Fanlore forum, we might be able to add other OTW spaces (for example an AO3 forum) to the existing account at a later date.

Now we want to hear from you:

- What do you hope to see in a forum? What would make you want to use it? (What would put you off from using it?)
- Which topics and threads would you like to have?
- Some ideas: FAQ, introduction thread, compilation of talk page discussions, pages in progress, announcements, news, fannish history discussions, suggestions, gardeners, …

At present, the wiki committee doesn’t have experience setting up or running a forum, so input from anyone with forum expertise would be appreciated and fans willing to help as a moderator would be welcomed with open arms.

We’re in the early stages of planning, so really, any sort of input is appreciated!

A few news items from the Wiki Committee for you all.

First, users rightly pointed out that the Identity Protection policy page could be clearer about what to do when you have an identity protection issue (short answer:contact the committee!), so we added some bold text at the top of the page. The policy itself has not changed.

Second, the Archive of Our Own is hosting their second April Showers challenge to upload your old fanworks, especially from older fandoms that may be underrepresented on the archive. Each day will focus on a different fandom (announced via twitter, see also fanlore_news). As part of the challenge, we invite everyone to add their fandom memories to Fanlore. We will be hosting two editing chat sessions in the Fanlore chat room where you can ask questions about wiki editing.
The first session is this Friday 08:00 GMT (in your time zone)

The second session will be sometime during the weekend of April 14-15. More details later.

Thirdly, for those who are not subscribed to the [community profile] otw_news community, here is the Fanlore section of the OTW's March newsletter:
Another new member joined the Wiki committee: welcome, Shannon!

The Wiki committee is currently planning and working on several projects, including forums and a mediawiki upgrade to fight spam.

Last weekend, the committee held two informal chats for our new members and gardeners, which we hope to turn into a regular event for anyone interested.

On Fanlore, editors have been very busy adding vids to several new categories, for example Supernatural vids, Battlestar Galactica vids, Buffy the Vampire Slayer vids, Angel vids, and Firefly vids. Other new categories with many pages already are Vidding Awards and The Professionals Fanfiction.

I note we're using  footnotes more and more (or rather we're preferring to use footnotes more and more).  I think it may be helpful to add the "Reference" display code to a few of the templates that seem to generate pages with a lot of footnotes. That way there will need to be fewer key strokes, open tabs and copy and pasting.  And if there are no footnotes when the page is set up, then the code just hangs there at the bottom of the page until it is needed. I know I am more likely to add a footnote if I don't have to navigate to the cheatsheet to track down the Reference code first.

Thoughts?

edited: Turns out we can create custom "help" templates. I've created one for FanVids here: http://fanlore.org/wiki/Help:Vid_pages/Template

Last weekend we held a chat training session for our new committee members and gardeners to introduce them to Fanlore and answer question. It was announced on the mailing list on very short notice, and we are sorry about that. In the future we hope to have regular chat sessions, announced publicly and in advance, for anyone who is interested in editing Fanlore and/or has questions.

Here is a compilation of questions that came up at last weekend's chat sessions. Thanks to everyone who dropped by and contributed!
WebCite, chat transcripts, dates, minor edits, edit summaries, tips on searching the wiki, and a few motivational quotes )

This was posted in a Pros LJ community, but thought it would be helpful to repost it here as well.
---------
We’ve reached the end of our unofficial “Pros On Fanlore” week.  Here is a  quick run-down of the work the volunteers completed these past few days:

On the Pros History timeline
*changed all of the citations into footnoted references to make the page easier to read.
*worked on adding additional perspectives  on the history of the circuit library along with other events from the 1990s.
*filled in more recent history (2009-2011)

Note: The timeline needs more non-LJ events for recent years.  And overall, we need more international content – right now the page is mainly US and UK with a smidge of Australia.

In other areas:
*Volunteers set up the Pros Fanfiction category and started by listing a few favorite stories. There still are many classic Pros stories that need to be documented. And of course, we need a healthy dose of more recent (post 2000) fiction. One idea a volunteer suggested is that if you’ve ever done a review or a rec of a Pros story in a zine, newsletter, mailing list,  LJ community or your blog, you can start by adding that story, along with your review/rec.
*Set up stubs for several of the Pros LJ communities – but that’s all they are right now. Here is the one for teanandswissroll.  It looks so sad, so empty. Here’s an example of an LJ community that has been completed. Pretty.
*Volunteers set up a category for Pros fan vids. As above, we need more entries on both older and more recent fanvids. To help jog your memory on older vids you can look here or here
*Added a link to [info]krisserci5’s and friends detective work uncovering the earliest Pros slash stories.

On a personal note: last year I set up memorial pages for both long-time Pros fans Lily Fulford and Joan Martin  – if you knew them,  please head over to their pages and add your condolences and memories.  Additional memorial pages for many other fans can be found here

So that’s the summary for the unofficial  "Pros Week on Fanlore." And while some of the volunteers will be moving on to other fandoms, we hope the community will keep adding more content. Remember,  Fanlore is a wiki which means it is open to join and editable by any and all fans  and  supports plural points of view. So grab your  Pros memories, your Pros favorites, and your love of this fandom and  its fabulous history  and head over to Fanlore.

For those who are not subscribed to the [community profile] otw_news community, here is the Fanlore section of the OTW's February newsletter:
The Wiki Committee is slowly getting back together for the new term. With two people returning and four new committee members, we are still getting to know each other and are very happy to welcome coian, lab, LunaMoth116 and Tiyire! We have great plans for this term, including a forum, so wish us luck.

Systems continues to work on our spam problem and has more anti-spam weapons in its arsenal. Currently, users may notice that there is a temporary block on creating pages for the first four hours after they register an account. Meanwhile, the gardeners are fighting the good fight and have blocked more than 1,000 spam accounts in the last 2 1/2 months. That means the RecentChanges page can look a bit like a blood-drenched battle field, but you can hide the carnage with this filter.

In Fanlore news, editors have been busy adding information on lots of different topics. Editors who want to document fanfic writers' websites can now use a new template and category for Author Pages. Several editors have been holding Merlin editing parties on the weekends, and almost all fanwork pages and images have been added to the date categories--if you want to get an idea of what (mostly media) fandom looked like 30 years ago, check out 1982. More fandoms welcome!

Thanks to a friend I have just found you guys on facebook and wiki....I wanted to add some things to the history of Slash as one program is missed out which is Stargate SG1 where slash is VERY big...considering the 2 lead actors actually played some scenes as if they were a married couple AND there are some outtakes which are called 'The Brokeback Mountain' outtakes and although we know about them they will never be seen which is a shame.... :(

Thanks for letting me relive a load of memories...

Kriss :)
