Thank you everyone for your participation this year! Your next challenge will be... to think up some awesome challenges!

Do you have some fun ideas for expanding fanlore content? Are there some topics, characters, ships, creators, communities, or entire fandoms that you wish there was more content on? This is your chance to submit challenges! Please feel free to browse the challenge tag to see what kinds of challenges we've done in the past, but don't be afraid to submit something a little different, too! We'll be collecting challenge ideas for future use, and hope to use one of our new submissions for the very next one!

The submission period will last one week, and in the meantime the Share the Love challenge is still open for submissions =D

http://waybackmachine.org/

"The classic Wayback Machine will remain in concurrent operation for a period, for comparing functionality, but may not receive any further index updates. (It received its last major update in 2008, with only small piecemeal updates since.) So, please use the new site for accessing material from recent years."

More here.

Since the new link is still in beta testing, I plan to use them side by side since the new website goes offline for updates from time to time.

The Origin Stories challenge is now closed; thanks so much to everyone who contributed and helped us kick off the new year! Fan and user pages updated for this challenge include Kass, Mlle | User:Mlle, User:Espresso_Addict, and Justira — check them out, and don't hesitate to keep contributing to this challenge even though a new one is now available!

But the fan editing is not over, for now we get a chance to spread the love to others! Our new challenge is:

Sharing the Love

Writing about yourself might feel a bit too self-congratulatory... but writing about a friend won't! Do you have a friend or just someone you admire who's done something awesome in fandom? Stub out a page about that person and the awesome fannish things they do!

Please do feel free to drop a comment letting us know what you've added, or to ask any questions you may have! This challenge will last through February 14; the clock starts now; ready — set — go!

Please do spread the word about this challenge if you're so inclined, and have fun!

Thanks so much to everyone who contributed to the First Vid challenge! Pages created for this challenge include Hello, Canadian Actor Bingo, and Only Happy When It Rains; check them out, and remember that you can always respond to older challenges even after new ones have been posted — whatever gets us creating, editing, and contributing with joyous abandon!

And speaking of new challenges, I am super excited to announce the next one! It's a new year, and we have a very fitting theme:

Origin Stories

How did you come into fandom? Did someone show you the way in, or did you find fandom via google? When did you enter fandom? What was your first fandom? What does fandom mean to you?

This week, edit your user or fan page to include the story of how you got here and why you stayed.

Feel free to drop a comment letting us know what you've added! You’ve got two weeks; the clock starts now; ready — set — go!

So a few of us have been removing incorrect categories and switching templates on the zine pages for a couple months now. I'm about half-way through the Anthology Zines, and I've noticed some other dedicated souls fixing categories on lots of pages, so this thing might get done before 2012!

But we're having a little discussion about the Anthology Zines category name, which may or may not need to be changed. Mostly I'm reposting this in dreamwidth because I made some graphics over Christmas to illustrate the zine category structure. Check out the current state of affairs:

If you haven't seen this a hundred other places,[personal profile] wistfuljane  has a post up  at [community profile] newslettering  about the current status of delicious, which might be of interest to editors.  I noticed Frogspace just added a link to a delicious list on a page, and I'm sure lots of pages have links and cites to delicious.

This isn't an emergency (yet), but a lot of fannish resources are housed there, so something for us all to watch as people move things.

We’ve got exciting news: Fanlore is out of beta!

What does this mean? It doesn’t mean that the wiki is “complete” — we’re not sure a wiki is ever complete. (There will always be more to record and remember.) But it does mean that we’re moving into a new phase of our existence.

The Wiki Committee has spent the last two years tinkering with the wiki, drafting policies and FAQ materials, and doing our best to create a structure in which those who want to record the unique histories of transformative fanworks and the fandoms out of which they emerge can do that recording. We think we’ve reached a point where the wiki works fairly well, which means that now we can fling open the doors and encourage more fans to participate in documenting the things they want to remember.

We look forward to continuing to polish and improve the way the wiki works — hopefully with help from all of you who have been a part of the wiki from the beginning, and from those who are just joining us now. If you contributed to the wiki once upon a time, but fell out of the habit, we hope you’ll come back; if you’ve been meaning to contribute, now’s a great time to start. Tell the world! Bring your friends! Fanlore is officially open for business, not in a beta capacity, but for real.

We're closing out the First Vid challenge. It sparked new pages on Only Happy When It Rains (XF), Hello (SGA) and Canadian Actor Bingo (6CD). If you created a page in response to this challenge and it's not listed here, drop a comment and let us know.

This is our last challenge of 2010, but we'll be back in 2011 once the new OTW term gets underway, and we promise many more challenges in the new year. (If you have suggestions for challenges that would be fun to respond to, feel free to comment here with those ideas -- we welcome suggestions.)

Thanks for participating, everyone!

I received a request that, where possible, we start creating table of contents dividers for fanzines with more than a few issues. It helps with editing,  navigation and internal citations, so my plan is to add them whenever I come across a page with more than 3 issues.  I wanted to encourage others to do the same since we certainly have enough fanzines to warrant the effort.

I call them table of contents dividers, but the actual term is 'Headers" and they're created by  doing:
== Issue 1 ==

There have been some questions lately about our image templates and about what constitutes an "explicit" image (see our previous post on Image Policy FAQ revisions.)

Just to be clear: use of the image template is not optional! If someone posts an image without the template, we will edit the image page to use the template (if it's brought to our attention.) Please feel free to let us know if you see such an image posted, and/or feel free to edit the page to include the template yourself.

We've answered the question "What kind of images can I expect to have warnings on Fanlore?" with the response "Images that are sexually explicit, depict rape or sexual assault, or depict people or characters who are underage engaging in sexual activity should have warnings on Fanlore." After some discussion, we've come to the conclusion that we define “explicit” as “sexual activity with visible genitalia.” (We borrowed that definition from the Archive of Our Own TOS.) We have edited the image policy to make that clear.

If you have concerns or questions, please don't hesitate to let us know!

I love the Timeline of Slashed Sources, but do we have anything on media fandom history that's less slash-centric? There must have been at least a few big het fandoms in the 80s and 90s that wouldn't make it onto that list due to lack of slash. The Media Fandom article itself doesn't go into much detail (yet) in the history section. Like, for example, I know Moonlighting was ridiculously popular, but did it generate zines or just angry tv guide editorials? I know Remington Steele had tons of fan activity.

I don't know that we need a timeline necessarily, but if I'm looking at the slash timeline article and thinking "Ok, what about the other stuff", I have no idea where to look next.

A Thousand Ships challenge is now closed! Pages created for the challenge include Eric/Tami from Friday Night Lights, Arthur/Eames from Inception, and Jim/Molly from Sherlock.

Our next challenge is First Vid:
Start a page about the first vid or AMV you ever saw, the one that made you want to see more of them!

This challenge will run for roughly two weeks. Feel free to drop a comment on this post to let us know what you've added.

Hi all. Many thanks to everyone who commented on our previous draft of the image policy FAQ! Here's a new version of that FAQ. Note both the revisions to preexisting questions, and also the brand-new question and answer about Fanlore's Creative Commons license and whether it applies to fanart.

As before, we welcome your responses; Wiki committee members, Board members, and members of the Legal committee will be keeping an eye on this post so we can answer questions to the best of our abilities.

A Lot of Character challenge is now closed. [personal profile] kass was otherwise engaged, so I have the privilege of introducing our next challenge, A Thousand Ships:

This week, pick a favorite 'ship (from a fandom you're active in now, or from your first fandom, or from a fandom that's underrepresented on Fanlore) and start a page about that ship. Go to ship_manifesto if you need inspiration (and feel free to grab material from there — if you quote a manifesto, give attribution, and add some of your own material around the edges.)

P.S. Epic gen friendships are also welcome!

This challenge will run for roughly two weeks. Feel free to drop a comment on this post to let us know what you've added!

The fanfiction template is now in use. The Fiction Writing category is currently included in the template, but I've been wondering if we want to do something like the zine category structure and create a special subcategory for individual fanfics. Category:Stories?

I also started a draft for a generic infobox template with see-also fields and no category included. However, the current scope is fan activities (for example, File Sharing), which may be too narrow--would it also work for other topic overview pages like the History of Scanlation?

In other news, users have been talking about moving some sections on the slash page into separate pages. So far, we've got Slash vs. Gay and Slash Controversies.

We (some editors) have been discussing how to disambiguate the character pages for the many versions of Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, etc. on a talk page. Fanlore's standard naming convention for disambiguated character pages will result in some very clunky page names for this fandom (e.g. [[Sherlock Holmes (Sherlock Holmes (2009))]]). If anyone has any ideas, input would be welcome! At the moment, it looks like we might go with disambiguating Holmes by actor name, though this approach might create other difficulties. We're also considering main "hub" pages to collect links/info on multiple versions of the characters: here's the first one, which I just now slapped together.

Speaking of character pages, at present there is only one character page in the Sherlock Holmes category (here). This is depressing, and I, for one, would love to see more! (I wonder if we could organize a fandom-specific editing party like the Merlin party back in ... March? That was an amazing thing.)

Hi everyone! We've been hard at work on refining our proposed Image Policy FAQ, and at long last, here it is -- below the cut. We hope that it answers your questions about images on Fanlore (ranging from "How do I add an image to a Fanlore page?" to "What kinds of images on Fanlore can I expect to have warnings?") Along with this FAQ, we're debuting a set of image templates which we hope will make the uploading of images (along with their meta-data) easier.

We welcome questions, comments, and feedback on the FAQ and on the image templates. Members of the wiki committee and members of the Board will be keeping an eye on this post and we'll do our best to answer questions in a timely way. RL does occasionally keep one or another of us offline; thanks in advance for bearing with us.

With no further ado...

First, an admin announcement: we're tabling the previous challenge ("Front Page Banner") for the time being. Y'all raised some good points and we realized that we needed better guidelines and a longer timeframe for a redesigned logo/banner challenge, so we're calling a halt to that challenge and we'll re-launch it at a later date. Thanks for bearing with us, and we apologize for launching a half-baked challenge idea!

New challenge coming right up! And it is:

A Lot of Character: Pick a favorite character. Make a list of the three or four fanworks which most accurately capture what you love about that character. Then add those fanworks to the page about that character (or, if there isn’t a page yet, start one, and add those fanworks to the new page you’ve just stubbed out.) Then invite your friends to play along, and see what fanworks they add to those pages to complement the ones you thought of!

This will run for two weeks, more or less. Dive in, and have fun!

ETA: We're tabling this challenge for now, having realized that we need better guidelines and a longer timeframe. We'll re-post this challenge later once we've generated the better guidelines etc. Thanks for your patience; a new challenge is coming right up!

Hi all! The First Fandoms challenge is now officially closed; you're welcome to keep posting goodies from your first beloved fandom, but we're moving on to something new: the Front Page Banner challenge.

This is an art challenge. We’re closing in on the end of Fanlore’s Open Beta, and we’re looking for a new banner graphic to go on the Fanlore front page to replace the one that’s there now (the one that says “Fanlore: beta.”) We invite you to make us a new graphic, and post it in the comments here!

(By submitting a graphic to this challenge, you're giving us permission to use that graphic on Fanlore. That's probably obvious, but we wanted to mention it anyway, just to be completely clear.)

This challenge will run for roughly two weeks. Calling all fanartists: please spread the word, and we look forward to seeing what you guys come up with!
