I've been thinking about the process of documenting doujinshi on Fanlore. Not about me personally documenting it, but the documentation process in general. Every so often the topic of outreach comes up around Fanlore and the OTW, (which I think about more often then I care to admit,) and ease of use probably factors into that. Wikicode isn't difficult, but it's more work than filling out a simple form; for instance, MangaUpdates.com's "add a series" form looks like this, which is very straight-forward.

So on Monday, I got tired of bemoaning to myself the lack of a simple process for documenting doujinshi, and I made one that works for Fanlore:

Check it out!

Basically, it takes all the information in the form and converts it into basic wikicode using the Doujinshi template. It includes a descriptive first sentence and categories. I'll write a breakdown of what happens with all the info if anyone would like to see.

This is just for doujinshi. Is there any interest in things like this?

At long last, a new challenge! The Total Braindump Challenge (from July) is definitely closed, and we now present....

Women Characters, Science Edition!
In celebration of Ada Lovelace Day (October 7), why not create a Fanlore article about your favorite female character who is a scientist, engineer, or mathematician? Tell us about your fannish experiences with these characters — the women themselves, the relationships they’re in (het, lesbian, canonical, fannish, etc.), the fanworks they star in — whatever you can think of! You can stub out a new page, or add a sprinkle of information on an existing page.

The wiki committee has been working on some additions and clarifications to our FAQ materials and policy pages. We present all three of them below, for your perusal and commentary. We look forward to your feedback; if there are no objections, we'll make these changes within the next few days.

Proposed image policy addition: I am a fanartist, and I object to some of my work being displayed on Fanlore. What can be done about it? )

Hi all. Recent conversations between the wiki committee and some Fanlore users have inspired us to offer these friendly reminders:

There are two kinds of pages about fans on Fanlore: userpages, and pages about people. Anyone can edit their own userpage to say whatever they want to say; each userpage is edited by the user in question, and not by others.

Pages about people (unlike userpages) are group-edited. Fanlore is a collaborative project, and no individual user "owns" any given page -- even the page about themselves.

If you are a fan and there is a page in Fanlore about you, you are welcome to edit that page as long as you abide by Fanlore's editorial policies and our ethical standards for community content; of course, others are also welcome to edit the page about you as long as they abide by those editorial policies and community standards, too.

If conflicts arise about something on any page (including a page about a person), we ask that the people involved use the talk page to collectively figure out how to represent all sides of a given story, as our plural point of view policy indicates.

In cases where there is concern about identity protection, the wiki committee can edit pages as needed and can hide the edit history. If a page on Fanlore reports a connection between a person's fannish identity and RL identity (or between separate fannish identities), and that person does not wish to connect those identities online (and does not connect them her/himself elsewhere online), contact the wiki committee and we'll take care of it right away.

We have a pre-1995 name policy which states that the default assumption is that a fan who was active under his/her legal name prior to 1995 should not have her/his legal name published on Fanlore unless s/he is still using that name or has indicated that use of the full name is permissible.

We hope this is helpful. Happy wiki editing!

[personal profile] lian had some meta about the OTW, for those of you who are interested in the organisation behind Fanlore.

Inofficial post is unofficial and curious.

I only very occasionally add stuff to Fanlore, but I used to be a heavy editer back in the day. So it idly occured to me to check my edit count: I've never done that before, but apparently it's right there under "My preferences".

Turns out my edit count is 1,208. Hmmm... honestly, I have no idea whatsoever whether that's meagre? average? creditable? (I thought it was more, tbh, seeing as I do tons of silly little typo edits etc.)

Indulge me -- what's your edit count? And how does it compare to your expectations? Any anecdotes you want to share?

Some news!

Fanlore now has its own copy of the FixBunching template, which lines up block-level items along the left or right margin.

Also added is a SiteTumblr template, for Tumblr pages that are particularly fannishly influential! Like Fanfic Flamingo, hint hint :) This template is a work in progress, so please feel free to suggest changes.

I'm working on the article on Fandom and the Internet, and I could really use some more perspectives. Previously, this article was a rehash of a lot of the Zines and the Internet content. This leads to, IMO, way too much focus on the differences between "print fans" and "net fans" and a tight focus on fanfic.
Hmm... this is kind of long, isn't it? )

Thoughts, anyone?

Anybody up for documenting the early response to Pottermore? I'm on Tumblr, and I've just had to filter out the squee :)

I'm trying to get more Tumblry people into Fanlore -- so I started tagging my musings, as well.

I started some new templates that could use input from others:

Template:Songbook
Template:Webring
Template:SiteRec

Categories to go with these templates have not yet been created.

In other excitement, although Fanlore now has date categories, brave Doro appears to be the only one working to add them to the 9000 fanworks pages. I believe she has reached "I" now? Other people are welcome to join in. (However, there are plenty of pages in the Chronology/date category hierarchy already. Check it out!)

I mentioned this on the talk page a while ago, but I'd like to remove conventions from Category:Offline_Spaces and define it as "offline spaces other than conventions". Right now it is overwhelmed with conventions and doesn't seem very useful since conventions already have their own category. Plus, Offline_Spaces is a subcategory of Fan Communities, so I suspect it was intended for things like fan clubs. What say you?

The What's Hot Now challenge is officially closed! (Remember, you are always welcome to take up a previous challenge at any time; check out our previous challenges here.) We now present...

Total Braindump Challenge: "The best of times, the worst of times..."

Pick an event in fandom that, for better or worse, people are still
talking about years (or months) later. If it doesn't yet have an
article on Fanlore, create one, and throw into it everything you can
think of. Tag the page with {{stub}} and possibly also add the words
"total braindump" somewhere near the beginning, so later people know
they're actively encouraged to clean up the page, add details, and
move things around.

Here are some resources to get you started: You can use the event infobox
template
if you're starting a new page. Check out what events already have some coverage in the Fandom Occurrences category. If you want to write about something that happened at a convention, you can also look at the Convention category. Throw your ideas on a page and link to it here, so other people can add their memories, play with the formatting, etc.

It's the middle of 2011, and the Fanlore wiki committee is feeling the need for some new energy and new enthusiasm. We're also short on members, so we're putting out a call: we are looking for more fans to join the Fanlore Wiki Committee!

What's the wiki committee, exactly? The wiki committee is a group of volunteers which works to keep Fanlore up and running.

What projects is the wiki committee working on? One of our big areas of focus this year is trying to increase fannish diversity on the wiki, and on outreach to fan communities which are (so far) under-represented on Fanlore. Lately we've also been working on shifting how categories work on the wiki.

Do I already have to be an OTW volunteer in order to join the wiki committee? Nope! We welcome anyone who wants to join the committee, whether or not that person is already an OTW staffer/volunteer. (Becoming an OTW staffer/volunteer is easy, we promise.)

What's the time commitment? The wiki committee usually meets via chat for one or two hours every two weeks. We do the rest of our work via email and via Basecamp, the website used by all of the OTW committees to work collaboratively on our various projects.

I don't know how to edit wiki pages, is that a problem? Not at all. We can teach you! And also, some of our work (especially the outreach work) doesn't involve actual wiki editing at all.

Are you looking for any skills in particular? We could definitely use some CSS experts; we're also especially interested in folks who are enthusiastic about helping us to reach out to communities currently under-represented on the wiki.

I think I'm interested. What do I do? Drop a comment on this post or contact us (here's a link to the webform where you can contact us) and we'll get back to you asap!

I don't have the time for this, but I know someone else who might. Feel free to spread the word in your own journal or via email to anyone you think would be a good fit.

A new Fanlore challenge awaits!

We challenge you to contemplate and document What’s Hot Now -- What’s the most recent fanwork (story, vid, piece of fanart) you’ve seen and loved? Create a page for it and write about why it is awesome.

Remember, you can always go back to the Red Print challenge at any time! We welcome new edits on old challenges :)

The wiki committee would like to offer our thanks to everyone who has commented on our recent posts about categories on Fanlore, Category proposal (May 21) and Category proposal II (June 18). Your input has been really helpful.

Based on those conversations and the conversations we've had within the committee, here's what we're now planning to do. Information and diagrams under the cut! )
Thursday, June 23rd, 2011 10:37 pm
The OTW's Wiki Committee will host an introductory chat to editing Fanlore. The chat is aimed at both current and new editors.

Come join us on Sunday, June 26 at 17:00 UTC in the Fanlore chatroom on Campfire. The chatroom can be accessed at https://fanarchive.campfirenow.com/60af4

Fanlore, a fandom wiki, is devoted to preserving the history of transformative fanworks and the fandoms from which they have arisen.

Thank you to everyone who gave us feedback on the category proposal from May 21. As suggested by facetofcathy and others, here's a further revision to that proposal:

Instead of deleting the format categories that currently reside under Fandoms by Source Text, we will move them under another parent category we will create called _Fandoms by Canon Type_. The fandom categories will look something like this:

cut for images, explanation, examples )
--------------------------------------------------------------

We welcome discussion, comments, and feedback.

Thanks to all who attended our introductory chat for those who are interested in editing the wiki!

We've been asked to share the chat transcript so that those who weren't present can learn what they missed. Before we do that, we want to make sure that everyone who was present is comfortable with public posting of the transcript -- but we don't have contact info for everyone who attended. So we're putting out a call: if you were present at that chat, please let us know if you'd be comfortable with the chat transcript becoming public?

We're working now on scheduling our next training chat. The chat will be open to the public, and this time we'll make sure everyone knows from the beginning of the chat that we'd like to share the transcript. We'll post here soon with details on the scheduling of that chat.
